Slowing teams down

Isnt there anything this staff can put in to atleast slow the other team down? Chizik and all his knowledge of D cannot come up with a gameplan to keep the gains under 15 yards a pop. It looks like they are playing a base D every game and not putting in a gameplan to stop what other teams do well. I figured this team would take its lumps this year, but I also figured they would look like they belonged on same field as other Big 12 teams.
 
We could have our corners give the receivers a 15 yard cushions, a la McCarney. That would keep the receivers in front of us and we could just let them slowly bleed us to death.

Ahh, the ol' "bend but don't stop bending" defense.
 
the bend but don't break defense works if you force turnovers and have an offense that can constitenly move the ball effectively with a long field. But when you have no pass rush from your front guys to cause hurries that lead to turnovers - then you can't use this defensive philosophy
 
Our defense is the type that would be successful once we get the right players in.... we are still developing so many young players that it is tough.... we don't get any pressure on the qb, and we can't stop the run.

Any defense will work if you get pressure on the qb and stop the run.

True... I guess I didn't word that right... I just mean that overall our defense is either not athletic enough or were young and still developing and the dline is where its really become the most glaring imo
 
McCarney had his teams give cushion. People complained. Now we're tight and just being beat out of less talent and people complain. Comes down to talent.
 
Our front 4 is getting no pressure on the QB...

Our LB's aren't quick enough...

In my opinion, McCarney left the cupboard bare in these areas and it will take Chiz a few years to recruit "his" players and get them developed.

We're playing approximately 11 true freshman due to necessity. Some of these true freshman have beat out established veterans that McCarney recruited. Don't throw Chizik under the bus in year 2!! Give him the time he needs to recruit and develop his players.

Also remember that he had a total of two months to recruit his first class.

Post of the day nominee! I remember when we were recruiting the classes that are this years juniors and seniors. People were concerned about the lack of DL and OL in the class... Well, I guess that is catching up with us now...

Yeah, that. But, the "ball-watching" fans will continue to put this on the secondary - ignoring what is going on in the trenches. The secondary is by far not without blame - but the big issue is we put absolutely zero pressure on the QB.
 
Personally with the way the Big 12 is stacking up right now, I think that we should be switching to a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5 defense. You could make the extra defensive back a hard hitting head hunter that could act as a rover. With the spread, you need more speed on the field and this would be a great way of doing it. PLus the 3-3-5 allows you to do some interesting blitz packages that can confuse the offensive line.

Just my opinion though.

I agree with this.

We're at the point where we may as well give up trying to apply pressure to the QB, as we're just plain not able to do it. Instead, have an extra DB in there for every play and concentrate on playing solid coverage on all receivers. An occasional extra linebacker to help the run defense. But right now the pass defense is just atrocious and its because we can't hit home on blitzes with all the guys we're sending and leaving DBs out on islands.
 
I get the talent thing and it is a huge part of the problem. But is there no scheme or gameplan that can be done differently to hold a team under 15 yards a pop. Safety and Dline have been problems for 3 years now. Both are places Mac usually had good players at, but for some reason 5 years ago they didnt get the talent and it is showing up huge now.
