SIGNING DAY CENTRAL 2024

I think the goal in recruiting for Iowa state is to find some good players. Beat out the Kansas States, Kansas and Minnesota type teams for their services. If they turn out good like TJ Tampa, hope they give us a hometown NIL deal. Kind of like when a MLB signs for the team he plays for, for
Less money because he likes the town, manager, and situation more than going somewhere and starting over.

The fact is ISU is never going to be able to recruit to the level of some of those teams you listed because Iowa just does not produce a lot of four and five star talent, and the ones that are tend to either go to EIU or out of state. I have said before ISU needs to do better recruiting here in Iowa, when you are a small rural state you need to take most of the talent each year from the state, go back and look at the top 10 football players from Iowa over the past 5 to 10 years, we are just not getting enough of them. EIU is kicking our butt with instate recruiting has been doing so for quite some time overall.
We need to beat them more often.
That would help considerably.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we haven't been beating Iowa for instate recruits and that won't be changing anytime soon with the separation of power going on in the sport currently. Only way it shifts is if their next coaching hire is a major flop. And Iowa head coaches are like green bay packer QBs so that isn't likely to happen.

I agree with this on the whole. Once our players prove themselves sell them on staying by pointing to their own success in Ames and uncertainty elsewhere.

As an aside, are hometown discounts still a thing in major pro sports? I can't think of the last time I heard about that happening.

First, they lose the West grouping, that's a hit. Second, Love isn't really tearing it up in GB right now.

I do also wish we got more 4 stars, but people gotta realize 4 stars are closer to 3 stars than 5 stars in talent. Just look at Georgia vs Ole Miss.

Quite frankly our 4 stars don't pan out that often.
A lot of times they don't because they get bumped up from a 3 to a 4 specifically because who is recruiting them and not necessarily because of their talent. I know a lot of people are down that we don't have any "4 stars" this year, but after the year we had with as young of a roster as we have, the core is pretty well set and it's going to be harder to convince a 4 star player to come in, since playing time might be more difficult. This looks more like a developmental class to me and that makes sense for this year. No reason to break the bank recruiting when you have a decent core, save the money for another year or use it to retain the core, which it seems like we did a pretty good job of.

I agree that occasionally this happens. Find the final rankings over the last 10 years and line up recruiting ranks and the pattern is there. Occasionally a team will pop up if the stars ( not recruiting) align and 'have a season'. TCU last year comes to mind.

FYI, Iowa is around a top 25 recruiter for those wondering.
This kind of backs up what I was talking about. @ChrisMWilliams used to have Dave in his KXNO show. Dave absolutely gets into the numbers. So yeah, stars matter folks.

Stars matter, but ISU is never going to be a program that wins because it attracts 4 star recruits. The state of Iowa just doesn't produce enough 4/5 star football players.

Sure there is "more" of a sure thing with 5 and even 4 star recruits. I quoted the word more because even among 5 stars, a high percent of those kids are busts. So the reality for ISU is Campbell needs to rely on 3 star kids and develop them.

If one looks at the Hawks limited success recruiting 4 star kids, it aligns with positions where they have put kids in the NFL for an extended period: TE, OL & LB.

Stars matter, but at a school like ISU- coaching matters more.

Dave calculates that too. Number one is always the star rankings...by far.(~75%) Coach effect (CE) is 2nd (how good a coach is I think 15%) and the remainder is home field. You can imagine, Campbell got a negative 1 Coach effect for the Ohio game.
Yes,coaches make a difference but you won't consistently win against higher ranked recruiting classes. Heck, Iowa usually out recruits 9 opponents per season. What had that turned into for wins?
With ISU recruiting rankings you'll see about 6-6 on average per year with outliers above and below but that's our average until we can recruit better.

Kind of surprised how few Iowa kids are in this class. I know it isn't ranked great as a class in general anyway, but I always feel like ISU has better luck with Iowa kids developing and staying.

There is a definite stratification of college programs regarding recruiting, transfers, NIL, and now, bowl selection.
I am watching much more NFL/NBA now - at least they have established limits, regulations, and parity.
