I'm a little surprised by the votes. What are the reasons for no?

Personally, I think if you are in a creative field (acting, writing, music, etc.), Facebook can be a great networking tool. It is a place to build out relationships with contacts from various events. In other professions, I can see why it wouldn't be as beneficial.

As for LinkedIn, I think I can echo what others are saying and state that it really hasn't been that useful for me. Not sure of its full potential though.

Facebook is for 6th graders and 40 year old women for only socializing. Get a Teitter, it'll actually keep you up to date on information regarding anything and everything based on who you follow.

I voted no because I find little value in it. My wife is on it, any small value I can get from her (hey did you know this?). As for 'keeping in touch' with people...the people I've lost touch with, there's a reason I did. The people I care about I keep in touch with already. My wife got all these reacquainted friends when she got on it...what...maybe 5 years ago, and we were meeting up with all these long lost friends...yeah, they're all back to just being on her feed and that's it.

So, I can't really speak to it's value as a professional networking tool, but I can't imagine it'd be that good, unless you kept your 'work clothes' on with everything you posted.

I'm one of the three people that have voted yes. You need to have a quick trigger-finger on blocking the plethora of Facebook friends who will just post a bunch of things that aren't of interest to you. My newsfeed is pretty much limited to my family, old friends, immediate friends, and updates from things I like and want to get updates from. I like it. Plus, it is still nice to stalk someone once in a while.

Tell me more about this Teitter...I haven't heard of it, but hey, I ain't keepin' up with all the kiddos these days.

:sad::wink:

I voted yes too. It didn't really serve much purpose other than a time-waster for the last 7 years or however long I have had it until I graduated in May. Pretty much all of my friend from home, highschool, college, etc. are from eastern Iowa and I moved to western Iowa after graduating so it helps me keep in touch with people that I may not pick up the phone and text or call on a regular basis.

And I am the third person who voted yes, for the same reasons.

If you say things like "I haven't had a Facebook for three years" than no you shouldn't. I'm guessing a place like farmersonly.com would be more in line.

I voted yes. Good for keeping in touch with people you know, not so sure about business contacts, though.

FB isn't the place to make connections with possible employers. However, it is a good way to build rapport with people that you trust in the work place as long as you aren't an idiot about what you say on it. Personally, I tend to keep work and play separate from each other, so I am very selective about who I "friend" on FB.

Depending on field you're looking at, from what I've seen of it, if you're in the private sector Linkedin seems somewhat beneficial. If you're in a public field, it won't help you much.

If you get Facebook you can get wonderful messages in your inbox like this one I received today:

Hello,
My Name is Amanda, How are you doing today? hope you are fine, I will like to introduce myself more better and share passionate of friendship with you in my next mail, I enjoy the company of true friends.
It will be my pleasure if only you can write to me directly to my private email at ( ), so i can tell you more about myself and equally send you more of my pictures there in your email, or you can also drop your own email with me here so i can use to write you back in your email.
Thanks for your understanding,
Amanda.

If you get facebook, just make sure you hide your profile so employers can't find you. Either that or un-tag every drunk picture that is posted

More likely to get you in trouble than help in any way shape or form. As people mentioned Linkedin is a much more effective however the social groups that are developing on there are dumb. I was in on the hiring process for an open position and the hiring manager straight up said anyone with facebook is going to be pretty much downgraded on their list. Funny part, most qualified guy was dumb enough to friend that manager right before the interview. Note to everyone... don't friend potential employers regardless of the cleanliness of your facebook profile... it is creepy.

People still go on Facebook?

I did the other day, sad thing about adding everyone that you went to high school with is that some apparently haven't matured:

"Like and we can have a Facebook marriage."

Quickly left Facebook.
