I am curious what everyone has for a shaver. My wife bought me a new one for xmas, it is a braun. I used to have a norelco with the 3 spinning heads. The norelco was a nice shaver, but the braun sucks and it was pretty expensive and its to late to take back. What does everyone have and your thoughts?

I have a Braun that I've been using for about 10 years now and it's great. Far better than any other electric that I've used in the past. My dad bought a Braun to replace his Remington that died, and he thinks the Braun is far superior as well.
 
I have an electric Remington. It's the 2nd one I've bought in 12 years. Have been happy with them both. Not sure on the model but I know there are 2 foils, not pivoting heads.
 
I used a Braun for quite a few years before it fell apart and bought another (maybe $80 if I remember correctly) and really like it, too.
 
Had a Braun that I used for many years before the battery quit taking a charge. I thought I'd try something else and bought a Norelco. The Norelco sucked for me. I don't like to shave every day so I get some pretty long stubble at times. The Brauns work better for me by far.
 
Van Der Hagen Traditional Safety Razor with the apothecary jar and brush. It works great, but you will cut yourself if you are not careful. It cleans great and the blades last a long time. Would never go back to the Gilletes or Schicks.
 
Merkur Futur with Feather blades.
Crown shaving pre gel.
Either Art of Shaving or Taylor of Old Bond cream.
WSP Monarch silver tip brush.
Proraso after shave.
 
Dollar Shave Club blades + shave soap and a brush. I use Nivea after shave balm which is stellar.

For the wet shavers in the group, what shave soaps / creams are you using?

I have Proraso Refresh (green jar) and Proraso Nourish (red jar). The refresh is by far my favorite both from a scent and feel perspective as well as ease of lather.
 
Edwin Jagger double edged safety razor
Escali pure badger shaving brush
Personna double edge razor blades
Proraso shaving soap or Van Der Hagen scented soap
Nivea post shave balm

I'm using the Proraso refresh right now but want to try the red and white jar sometime just to compare.

Art of Shaving has some really creamy soap, Taylor's is more of a hard soap but lathers up well for me.
I have a Kiels cream but it doesn't lather was well as AoS for me.

I found myself to not be a fan of the sandalwood scent. To me it smells like baby powder.....at least, the Proraso version does. I also have a harder time working the lather up so my razor doesn't drag. To be frank I would avoid it.

The green jar smells better, the cooling feels great, and i can lather it up really fast which makes for a faster shave during the work week.

Edit - I face lather if that makes a difference

I like AOS cream but it's a little pricey for my taste. I've found that Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood from Amazon is just as good for a little less. I don't like the hard soaps as much.
 
So what's the story with bay rum? Anyone use it and like it? Dumb question but I assume it smells like rum?
 
Edwin Jagger DE 89, feather blades, Taylor of Old bond Street Eton College shaving cream. Nivea post shave when I feel like it . CF was my main reason for going to this style of shaving and I greatly thank them - I dont throw 5 bucks away everytime I change a blade

I recently took up safety razor shaving and like it a lot. I ended up dipping in with the Dorco Prime set since it was on a huge sale. So far so good. Blades are very cheap compared to the store bought multiblade systems. Obviously how I shaved too a bit of a learn, but glad I did it.
 
I have a huge stock of DSC blades left. Once they are gone I think I'll migrate to DE.

How long was the learning curve? How often are you shaving and with what pattern? IE: with the grain, against, across, combination or all three? Does your shave take longer?

Prep and cleanup takes a little longer IMO with DE. The results, cost, and I don't hate shaving as much (it doesn't feel like a chore now) are the benefit.
The key is little pressure and I go with the grain, never against.

2-3 shaves - its not thattttt hard you just have to pay attention. I go with and across. Against just tears me up. The good thing about it with me is I shave at night then I wake up and I'm still smooth. Not much longer, maybe a minute. I just brush the cream right on my face and lather there to save time.
