I personally don't see what the big deal is. Yeah, it's the first ESPN Primetime game since 1984, but ESPN requires cable/satellite/streaming.

Just like how people claim that MNF is the biggest NFL game of the week, it has required the above since 2006.

Being on the ABC Primetime Saturday slot, or NBC SNF is a much bigger deal as EVERYONE (meaning the entire country) can see it OTA.

I don't have cable/satellite, and while I have the ability/funds to subscribe to Sling every Autumn for football/NBA season, not everyone does (Norwalk, despite blowing up, is still pretty rural for cellular service, and I use my phone as a hotspot for when I need Internet to save money, as it is included in my bill).

I will never forget when Iowa State beat Oklahoma and Spencer Rattler in Ames a couple years ago, and that was in the ABC Primetime slot (technically ESPN) THE SLOT you want, but it got absolutely NO hype at all (unlike Clemson/Florida State, or a Big 10 matchup for example).

MNF and Saturday Night just aren't what they used to be.

Wow. I've been fired up about this game all week (can't attend), but after reading your post I see your points and probably won't even watch it. The length some on here will go to find a negative truly baffles me. I'm surprised you didn't mention it requires a TV and was waiting for you to say you don't have one of those either.

You can’t watch the ISU game without basic cable or streaming? Say it isn’t so.

I think that’s been the case for nearly every game my entire life. Cmon man, the Saturday evening slot on ESPN is a prime slot. It will be on at damn near every sports bar and restaurant in the country on Saturday.

There are about 130 million households in the United States.
About 100 million have a streaming service.
Just under half of households pay for cable or satellite TV service (this was over 50% until just the last year or so).
About 19 million use over the air television.
Of those 19 million, about 10 million also have a streaming service.

So, about 7% of households (9 out of of 130 million) only have access to television content via OTA broadcast.

Yet, MNF's viewing numbers keep going up. They've been reporting well over 20 million viewers for the recent MNF games.

This data is rounded for ease of typing & readability, and is easily findable at Nielsen, ESPN, and other reporting sites.

I honestly think that “piss in your cheerios” post above is one of the oddest, most out of place responses I’ve ever read on this site.

Saturday night is going to be great. It’s a huge game and a nice showcase in a year we didn’t expect much. Go Cyclones!

I had a buddy who texted me saying the same thing tho. Apparently his twitter was blowing up with hype for the game. His response was... "eh, just win!". Outside of the ISU fan bubble, the hype could seem a bit much. I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of general college football fans have no idea that Iowa State is tied for first place (and has a legit shot at the championship game).

That said, I'm enjoying it. This feels like 2021 vs. Texas - and that game was rocking. Hope the sellout crowd is pumped. Tomorrow should be one heck of a college football Saturday.

And unless I look I don't know the general layout/standings of other conferences and I consider myself to pay fairly close attention.

USA sports fans are addicted to football and this game will be on in a lot of places but just like most games, most viewers won't really think much of it once it's over or even while it's on. If the end is exciting people will be watching closely in the last moments but only because it's entertaining, similar to how eyes are glued to some random first round NCAA tourney game.

I’ve had several people in the KC area bring it up this week. At the very least it’s a huge regional game in our area!

Isn't it the same for NBA too?
im not too familiar with NBA ratings but look at last weeks ratings the top game was Dallas/San Antonio that averaged 2.9 million on TNT on Wednesday night.

thursday night lakers/suns averaged 2.2 million while the Amazon prime football game with bucs/bills averaged 11.2 lol

Then why did you dumb my post? Is it possible you didn't catch the sarcasm when I said I probably wouldn't watch it? I would imagine that the announcers will address the implications of this game. My greatest hope is that we win and the games from here on out and our continued success garners the same attention. I am a PROUD graduate of ISU's class of 1976 and although I'm new to posting here I've been lurking for 10 or 12 years so I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and I have a hard time with people that dwell on the negative. Enjoy every moment.

I dumbed your comment because it was pointed at a specific poster. Their thoughts on the game are valid even if they are not the majority. Sarcasm wasn't missed.

I echo your pride and hopes. Tomorrow night is a huge game and I will be glued to the TV. (I've gotta see if I can get my 5 year old to bed over half-time, because I don't want to miss any of it).

Hahahaha. Yeah, that was about the response I was expecting. I guess I was just having a bad day yesterday, and needed to vent in some way about something, anything. I'm pumped for the game as well, and I am very confident we can pull off the upset.

Interesting, I did not know it was that low. Well I have certainly made an ass of myself.

Didn't mean to call you out specifically, and won't consider you an "ass". I'll remember you more for taking the time to post an explanation. I'm not as confident as you for the outcome but hoping for the same!

And in related news, Tommy Frazier is still the QB at Nebraska
