Severe Wx 4-14

Weather Channel saying parts of Nebraska getting baseball to softball size hail right now. Ouch.

for the weather gurus- I've heard several weather types say western IA under gun but central IA not as threatened. What causes storms to fall apart like that?

There is a cell in SW Iowa that is moving NE and getting stronger,

be interesting if the cell in NE and the one in SW Iowa combines here in central iowa to see what happens...

Well, part of it is storm motion, in a lot of spots should be more northerly.

Another big part of it is all of the dynamics of the system (the main forcing mechanisms) are farther out to the west. As the individual thunderstorms push to the east, they get farther away from some of the large scale driving mechanisms and upper level support.

A third is timing, harder to keep storms going, or at least in some of the more dangerous surface based modes overnight. Without daytime heating, things tend to be much more elevated.

Think of it as the broad scale part of the storm (the "cyclone") moving a bit more slowly than the very localized thunderstorms. They get away from the main engine that provides the push to get the storms going. The farther away from the center, the weaker all of the different fields and ingredients get.

kNU canceled their spring game.
Some good rain here so far, nothing I'd call severe yet.

Radar-indicated tornado resulting in a Tornado Warning for Madison and Adair counties.

that appears to be a heck of a hook echo on the tail of that storm. things can change, but the path it is on now appears to be lining up with the NW part of the DM area - urbandale/johnston
