Senior Night (Mel + O'Canada)

I'm sure Murph and Andy are just fishing for some d-bag "'Murica is fer 'Muricans" caller to make some Monday ratings. Nothing more than that.

I suppose. There was a thread over on another Iowa State board a few weeks ago with several people who were passionately against even considering doing it. It was shocking.

Of course, I tend to not get especially patriotic anyway. America is good. So are a lot of other countries. More importantly, there are good people from every country.

Saturday we play O Canada for Mel's last home game. Tuesday Steve King introduces a bill in the US House to block all federal funding to ISU for catering to foreigners.

I asked Alison Lacey once if they'd let her wear an Australian flag on her uniform. She said no they would not, but she would have liked to have had an Australian flag in the building at some point. I don't see why foreign players can't wear their own flag on their uniform.

I have no problem with this, but to be honest with you, I have never understood why the national anthem is played at sporting events. Especially in baseball, where a third of the players are foreign-born.

Yeah, I tend not to be overly patriotic either, so I wouldn't want something like this for myself. But after reading's Melvin's comments about it, I'm all for it.

I'm sure Naz would approve. Really, it's a small price to pay to give respect to one of our own anyway.

POssible extra bonus: I'm not sure if playing another country's national anthem has been done in CBB before, but if this gets exposure on Sportscenter, it could at least get the attention of some foreign players that may have not given us much of a look.

This is a good idea, and a good tribute. Surely they can pass out the lyrics to the song on cards or put them on the video board and invite the audience to sing along. Now, that make it really special for Ejim.

Lyrics to O Canada:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

They are not difficult lyrics at all. Practice up people!

According to Randy Peterson, West Virginia did it for one of their basketball players last year. I suspect it is fairly common.

The bottom line is it would just be a nice thing to do and it seems like it would mean a lot to Melvin. (On the other hand, if I was a basketball player in Canada, I could care less if they played the US anthem for me.)

After every Ejim dunk, and especially after lobs. We need the whole gym to give the Great White North theme.

I don't know. Sounds suspiciously like you're trying to trick people into joining the Night's Watch. Let the crows grow their numbers with castoffs and criminals, I say. I'll have no part of it.

very odd indeed.

Article in the RAG said that WVU did it last year with the Turkish National anthem for their bearded guy with very few vowels in his name. So not unheard of. I say go for it or play both which sounds like the plan. I hope a few fans learn the words to show some love for #3. Or have them on the back of the lineup card.

He was Turkish? I thought he was exiled from Krypton with two other dudes.

It'd be even cooler if the played Working Man or Tom Sawyer.

I know Tom Sawyer is in the pep band book. There were a lot of national/non-Iowa media that were tweeting their respect for ISU's pep band playing that during last year's tourney.
