Scary Movie ?

I'd have to go with these two. The original Halloween is incredibly well-shot - the cinematography is fantastic. #2 wasn't bad, either. The Exorcist is just terrifying.

I watched Poltergeist and Firestarter both one night when I was about 4 or 5 with my dad, and I couldn't watch "scary" movies again until I was in my late teens. Then I started watching whole series with some friends.

The movie that creeps me out (not scary, just "ew") the most is The Fly with Jeff Goldblum. That is the only movie that ever made me vomit.
I watched a documentary on the making of Halloween, they played some scary parts without the music and it's amazing what that did for it to make it scary.

I would honestly love to watch that. That music is truly a large part of it - Jaws is the only other horror film I can think of offhand that used score so effectively.

It was amazing to see how they shot it on a shoestring.

I knew the budget was tiny, but I'd love to see that documentary!

In other news, Jason's mom in the original Friday the 13th looked exactly like my grandmother. Try staying overnight there after seeing that as a child...

I wish I could tell you what it was, but I think I caught it on IFC or a channel like that.
I don't know why, but I'd pay twice as much to watch a movie that was shot independently on a shoestring budget than any big budget movie.

And that is scary. My Grandma only tried to kill us by overeating.

I love IFC - I'll keep an eye out for it there. I'm really big into the indies and non-blockbusters, too. Thanks for the great advice!!

While that is far less terrifying initially, that's damage that will last for years...

When I was a kid, maybe 5 or 6, it was the Boogens.

I guess I'm just one of those guys that doesn't get all "up" for scary movies. I think it's mostly because I find most of them so predictable that I just can't get scared. "Oooh, look - recently devirginized blondie is taking a walk through the forest at midnight. Oooh, look, she's walking in the general direction of a metal stake that's on the ground, and she doesn't see it! Oooh, look, uber-bad guy is picking up that metal stake... I wonder what's going to happen next..."

I guess if there was one movie that even came close to "getting" to me, it was the original "Saw". I have to admit, that movie was original and it did creep me out a little. I saw Saw II and it turned into the typical horror movie stereotype I just described above. I didn't even bother seeing III-V.

Your posts always bum me out. You could suck the fun out of a merry-go-round.

Depends on what you mean by "scary".

I got freaked out watching "The Descent" because I get freaked out about being in small places. Since I don't plan on going spelunking any time soon, it didn't have a lasting effect on me.

I didn't get scared watching The Grudge, but for some reason, when I'm sitting in a dark room, I'm still sometimes think of it and freak myself out. So, it didn't scare me when I watched it, but it had a lasting effect on me.

When I was a kid, Poltergeist freaked me out, but I watched it recently and realized how absolutely tame it really is.
