Didn't Kindler leave for OU around the same time as Cale leaving? The $$$ focus was on $$$ generating sports, and now football and MBB are established, WBB is an elite program, and volleyball is also getting to be elite. I think had he stuck around he would have gotten what he wanted. Wrestling was just too good at a time JP couldn't invest in it, same with gymnastics.
I thought the interview was really interesting. I think it proved it was more than him just leaving for greener pastures (or more money), but then again, HE made the initial contact. If you're not looking for something better, well then you're not out there checking for something better.
I imagine it was some strange combination of conflicting personalities, trying to make a fresh start, and a little bit of being in a better position (recruiting, etc.). I kinda feel bad for the guy and am kinda angry with him at the same time.
Kinda makes me wonder if this was part of the reason CFH didn't get the job the first time around. Not saying the results would have been the same, but maybe Cael and ISU would have both been better off with him becoming the coach 4 or 5 years later.

Fault on both sides I'm sure. I'd like to defend JP, but this was during his dark coaching decision days.
I'd welcome Cael back with open arms someday, but let's face it, we are barely able to support wrestling as a conference anymore.

Sounded like a couple things to me. Cael felt he was being pushed into the head coaching spot and that he wasnt ready when he started. On top of that, I think Cael struggled with the weight of his own shadow being that anything less than perfect at ISU didn't live up to the standard he set as a wrestler. In the end I think Cael needed the change for himself personnally, more so than any other factor. He was a perfect wrestler at ISU, but as a coach at ISU he would never meet the standard he set as a wrester. Understandable he felt the need to start somewhere else, probably was nice to go somewhere and not always have "perfection" so closely attached to himself.
He left. It sucked. It happened. Crappy thing is we have sucked since then.

People talking like Cael owes us something. He owes us NOTHING. The man owns the most prolific career in college wrestling and did that for Iowa State University. In the end, he did what was best for him. And that was to continue to succeed at the highest level. He felt he couldn't do that at Iowa State, so be it. He has given more than enough to this university.
I heard the interview yesterday. It sounded like there were people behind the scenes (probably donors) that wanted Cael to take over as coach. He didn't feel that he was ready, and Pollard didn't want to hire him, but had to because of the pressure from other people. After that, since Cael was never Pollard's choice, he wasn't going to do whatever it took to keep him around.
Yep. I think a lot of people didnt want to get Gable'd again. We lost our prodigal son to the bad guys. We didnt want to let the second-coming get away as well. And therefore may have pushed the envelope more than it should have been pushed.
I think JP told Cael what he thought of wrestling when he was giving bigger yearly bonuses to Chiz and GMac than Cael's whole salary. I'm not surprised it was Cael that reached out to Penn State, not the other way around. I've got no problem with Cael, he's our most successful and famous athlete and will always be an ISU legend, and I'll always root for him to keep pounding the hawks.
Why all the angst. It's over and done. Besides, Cael was a guy who was driven to be at the top - in high school, in college and in the international science. Why would that change when he got into coaching? If he felt that he had a better chance for success at Penn State, that's where he would go. Totally in character. It sucks that he left, but did what he thought was best to be the best - can't blame him for that!
I have had mixed emotions about Cael leaving, but the one thing I'm sure we can all agree on is that thank God he didn't leave for Iowa. The last thing I wanted as a fan and alumnus was to see another Dan Gable situation. We can at least cheer for Cael to kick Iowa's *** and keep them out of B1G and NCAA titles. If ISU can't make that run...at least Iowa won't in part because of an ISU product.
