Running/training shoes

I am 6ft and down to about 210. My current pair is K-Swiss. This was a brand new running shoe they came out with a few months ago and I love them. The style is Tubes Run 100 (this is my exact color). The store had a buy one get one half, I also bought a pair of Asics Gel Frantic 3's. I wore this pair for Dam 2 Dam last year and I will probably wear them (the new pair) this year too. They were outstanding.

They are equal in my book and have felt better then the previous several pairs of running shoes I have had.

I always stick with New Balance because I have a wider foot. They work great for me. Go to any good running store and they should be able to fit you based on your arch and amount of pronation.

I had the Gel Frantic 2's and they were great. nice arch support, lightweight, comfortable, also the Gel:)

do not get under armour running shoes. I bought some in 13s and they give me shin splints so bad that they look like goose eggs on my shins. I cannot run in them for longer than 5 minutes at any high rate of intensity.

Speaking of, does anyone have any good ways to get rid of shin splints besides ice? maybe something a little more long term like a type of stretch or lift to strenghten my shin muscles?

I recommend Fitness Sports on university in Clive. Huge selection and the staff knows their stuff. They will help you find the perfect shoes.

I have always heard the uglier the shoe, the better comfort and quality.

I am starting to work out and lift again and was wondering what shoes are the best. Instead of starting a new thread can anyone give me ideas?

If you are lifting heavy weights, doing a lot of squats and stuff, you want something very flat and stable on the bottom. The low top chuck taylors are about the best lifting shoe out there.

Go to a running store and get fitted for shoes. Different brands work for different people. They'll be able to watch you run and decide what kind of shoes you need.

Read this book

Amazon.com: Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen (9780307266309): Christopher McDougall: Books

and you will have a different perspective on running shoes.

Basically most of the best shoes are the least expensive running shoes while the more expensive running shoes are crap.

That was the last great book I read. Bought the 5-fingers and love them. Haven't run outside, but they are my dedicated workout shoes and I feel way more grounded.

I currently run in Newtons. Newton Running - The Science of Motion

Without a doubt I would recommend going to Fitness Sports on University and around 72nd street...across from Hy-Vee in Windsor Heights. Great help and they have a back hallway for running and trying out shoes. In the past I have been a New Balance and Mizuno fan. Ran in a lot of shoes that day and the best for me were the Newtons. Different and interesting shoe. Very light, but great support. They are suited for running on the balls of your feet. If you don't already, they will make you...great work on the calves. Probably not a shoe for everybody.

This was the first time I had even heard of the brand, and only place I've seen them carried at since.

I want to be clear that all shoes of the same brand are not created equal. There is a ton of differences between different models. A lot of stores, like sportmart, don't even carry the good NB models.

I would really head over to Fitness Sports. You may have a different pronation than everyone else on this board and then the shoes we recommend would be a terrible choice.

I have always loved Saucony. In fact, I can't run in anything else. Like was previously said, different things work for different people, but I have recomended Saucony to several people who had never worn them and they are all converts now and won't wear anything else. FWIW, I can't stand NB shoes.

Asking people what the best running shoe is is not the way to go about figuring out what running shoes are best for you. I would also stay away from ordering shoes online unless you have already run in the shoes you are buying and know they are right for you. I have been a steady (most of the time) jogger for over 20 yrs now and never had problems until I saw a shoe that I thought was "the shoe" and it ended up causing more injury problems in my feet then I have ever had. I have high arches and my feet over pronate, which means I tend to run on the outside of my foot. I bought shoes that had arch supports that only magnified the problem so I was dealing with calf and the muscle that goes up the outside of your shin bone problems. I figured I put on some weight so just needed to run through it and it would go away. Then I found out I had exactly the wrong shoe that I should have been using, got the right pair and now running is a lot funner. Especially if you are just getting into running, the worst thing you can do is pick a shoe that someone told you was the best but had totally different foot structure then you. Nothing keeps you from continuing to run like foot problems from using the wrong shoe.

This might sound weird but if I were you, I would get a paper bag that you got from a grocery story, get your bare foot wet and then step on the bag and wait about 20 seconds. Take a marker/pen and trace the impression your foot leaves on the bag. If you have the impression of your foot that has minimal impression on the middle of your foot, you have high arches which means you need more cushioning and less arch supports(if any at all). If you have a wide impression of the mid section of your foot, you have flatter feet and that is when you need more stability and arch support.

Take that paper bag with the impression of your foot that you traced and head over to Fitness Sports and show them the picture of your foot and that will give them a good idea on the best type of shoe for you. Then they can find a number of shoes for you to try on and then send you to the back hallway where you can run and make sure they feel alright. They then suggest you run on a treadmill for a couple times and if they don't feel right after a run or two you can take them back and try another pair.
