Running the Read-Option

Beyond the statistical evidence, CPR said in an earlier interview when discussing the QB competition and comparing the QB this week that SJ has trouble making the correct reads on the read option plays. I think the head-scratcher for many is, if this is the case, why does ISU run read option plays for a QB that has trouble making reads? Or, why does ISU not play the QB that is best at making reads if read-option plays have to be run?

For one thing it's the basis of the offense. Also, in a shot gun heavy system the types of plays that you can run are somewhat limited, that why run heavy teams in the gun run a lot of options. I understand your point, and I do think their is something to be said about using less of the zone read and more sweeps, draws, or down hill play out of the pistol.

But you can't do that on the option. You can't just predetermine where the ball is going. For crying out loud the play has been around 10 years, why does no one understand that. The play shouldn't be called with Jantz in because he can't make the read. DEs slow play him and have been coached that if you hover on the end and don't commit either way, he will take longer to make a decision and the play is screwed anyway. I will guarantee they have coached that. He is indecisive in both the running game and the passing game and it has killed us for the most part.

Probably makes sense. I am sure Jantz is a smart guy, so I don't know that it is a matter of him "making the wrong read". He is probably doing what he has been coached to do. But it seems like he just takes too long and has poor footwork to prepare for his run. By the time he decides "what" to do, the play is jacked for everyone, RB or QB.

With all of the debate about Jantz and Barnett, something that gets overlooked are the actual stats on running the read-option.

Jantz has 53 rushing attempts already...he is averaging 1.5 ypc. He averaged 2.6 on 84 carries last year. As others have mentioned, it's like we are hell bent on fitting that square peg into a round hole. In comparison, Shontrelle Johnson has 42 caries and James White has 37.

Barnett on the other hand...had 104 attempts for 437 yards for 4.2 ypc last year. All against Big 12 teams.

It seems if the staff really wants to run the read-option as much as handing it off to the backs, then Barnett should be the guy...especially if Rhoads told Mess to run the ball more this year. If Jantz is the guy, why don't we modify our offense a little and play to his strengths??

Great analysis. I am one that trusts our coaching and assume they are putting out the best person to run the offense, but I totally agree...maybe we need to adjust what we are doing to who is in there.

sacks are negative yard plays still? Maybe since JB doesn't get sacked as often should be taken into consideration.

There is only 1 stat that matters..........the W/L records. JB is 3-3 in Big12 play and SJ is 0-5!!!!

I agree 100 percent that 3-3 is a whole lot better than 0-5, it doesnt take a genius to figure that one out.

It wasn't even that imbalanced or problematic until the drive in the 4th Quarter where Jantz kept it too often and fumbled on the last scramble. Many of us are letting that drive color how we looked at performance during the whole game.

I have looked at this situation over a whole season and a half going back to last year, not one drive. To me he is an in between QB. He has a good arm but has trouble reading defenses/going through his progression (I don't know how many receivers he missed downfield last week), he has decent speed but he is too indecisive to run the read option. I don't know if they need to use motion a little more to help him read the D or what but he looks straight up lost out there sometimes. I feel Barnett should be given a shot at this point, especially if they are content running the read option and screens.

He makes the wrong read. There's a reason nobodies scraping on us and he isn't getting yards out of the option. That shouldn't happen on the average. He's indecisive so if the end floats he can make a play in either direction most of the time. You have to force a LB to the boundary if that play is going to work on a consistent play. The whole idea is not having to block a guy, yet take him out of the play. It's like throwing away from a corner.

I assume others are Football coaches on here.
When playing the "option" as a defense you eliminate the "option", by covering the pitchman.
Why? because now the option becomes a QB keeper.
So now everyone on the defense knows who will be carrying the ball.
So the rest of the interior defense is after the Qb.
I assume on the Read option, we the defense eliminate the HB by attacking him, and now we all go get the Qb.
It 's not an option unless the defense sits and waits to react, thats bad defense.
When we used the two back in the 3rd Qrter they couldn't remove the HB option.
Why? we had two HB, which one do you eliminate?
So TT had to sit and read, we moved the ball and score.
Why did we stop the two back set?
Don't know!
It also offeres mass pass protection, but fewer receivers, unless you use a delay hot route, wheel route.
Just my view.
