Running game....

The qb sneak argument can be argued by the ability to spread the field and throw from the shotgun..

But I do see your point

Iowa is going to stuff what little there is of the cyclone running game. The cyclone offense will become one dimensional. That will play into the strength of the Iowa defense. Ott will be applying pressure all game long. It does not look good for the cyclone offense.

Have to agree with this. Doesn't matter how bad UNI might be....I can't think of a time when ISU has played like crap and still won by 24. Not even the spring scrimmage.

This is a good point. Yea we didn't play well, but honestly after the last 2 years, I will take any win, anytime, no matter how it goes.

Just watched the cyclone express replay with JW and EH for fun an decided to just watch the Oline and Dline basically that's it. Couple thoughts. Our run game wasn't that bad. Yea we only had 77 yds net rushing but take Sam out and our RBs had 98 yds on 22 carries. That's 4.45 YPC avg. honestly we didn't run the ball that much. Not sure why because that first couple series Tyler Brown was running well, the we just stopped basically and threw a lot. We also had very short fields entire game. What I noticed was that when we wanted to run we had many 3-6 yd carries and folks that just didn't happen last year unless it was some draw on 3rd and 20. Most times on 1st down when we lined up in a big set and ran the ball we got a decent run and sometimes the hole was huge. Do we have a ways to go...sure but it was a heck of a lot better than previous years in game 1. And without arguably our best lineman in Burton.

Dline..dominance. No other way to put it. UNI Oline was young and inexperienced but guess what so was our Dline. We had 5 of our front 7 playing their first game..that's young..and we dominated UNI. Just go back and watch the replay and notice on nearly every play our Dline just shoved their Oline back 3-5 yds on nearly every play. When Jhausten gets his hands on you he just mauled his guy. Tucker is an absolute beast...the guy doesn't stop and runs down every play no matter where he is or where the ball is. I'm anxious to see how we do this week and with Taylor back to boot.

One last thing..I have little respect for UNI. There where several occasions in the 2nd half where the UNI lineman got beat so bad he just dove at the back of our players legs. Gabe Luna almost got injured bad and could have been done for the year. Just go watch late 2nd half. I realize it's football but every time we play UNI their cut blocks and clips get old. Ok I'm done. On to beating the Squawks!

Just wanted to give my opinion that our run game was actually not bad.
This is what I noticed as well.

Let the boys shake the rust off. Saturday and next Saturday will be clearer indicators for how things will go for the offense this season, IMO. Nevermind the fact that Tyler Brown had only 24 lifetime touches up until last Saturday, and as a unit, they still only have <45...

I believe the runs on the goal line were stuffed because UNI had time to run around the tackles and into the backfield.

Says a lot more about the play call than the execution.
This. the LBs made the tackles on the goal line

Yes, because the iowa DL did so well stopping the iSu run game last year and is missing their two best players from that defense.

Meanwhoile Ott is an AA because he got around a 280lb FCS LT starting for the first time every. He is so good, he got 3 tackles and two sacks. Much better than Pierson's 3sacks and INT oh wait...nevermind

That first 40-yard run by Brown was gorgeous. Waited for his blockers, then accelerated through the hole and had a nice seam. If he were a step faster he might have taken it the distance, which would have been truly glorious, as it's been awhile since we've had a long TD run by a running back.

Wow.... listen to the excuses on here.... short fields, played vanilla, UNI stacked the box, and my absolute favorite was when someone actually tried to use our 3 runs it took to score from the 6 inch line as a positive for our run game because those shouldn't have really counted as carries. Ummm, no.... it is precisely the problem when it takes you 3 tries to go 6 inches on an FCS D line.

Now I will give you that our average yd per rush, after taking Sam's sacks out, wasn't too bad. It wasn't great though either, and probably should be more like 5 or 6 yds per carry against a smallish D line.

By the way, my biggest complaint about that near goal line stand was that we were 7 yds behind the line of scrimmage in shotgun formation AGAIN. I couldn't believe my eyes. Are we never going to learn? We literally had like 6 inches to go for the TD. Put Sam under center and sneak it and end it already. At least we didn't try to throw it and get it picked off there.... I would have lost my mind.

Do you realize that even if the QB is under center, the running back is still going to be 5-7 yards off the line of scrimmage?

ISU only rushed for 82 yards last year. Iowa did shut down the run...it was their lack of offense and a great 4th quarter drive by SR that cost them the game last year. I fully expect Iowa to shut down ISU's run again...ISU will have to throw to beat them.

Sure, but he gets the hand off at speed near the los. Big difference.

True, plus you don't have to line up your running back 5-7 yards back in short yardage situations. In the old I and full house formations fullbacks were only 2-3 yards behind the qb for quick dives to take advantage of the line surge, and I've seen teams at all levels move their back closer to the line in short yardage situations.

The running game was okay, at best. The RBs really showed their lack of experience several times by missing cutback opportunities and getting strung out. One thing that will be interesting is if ISU can get the edge on a couple running plays. UNI was not very big, but they were fast, and pursued very well.

That was 2 sacks for Drew Ott in less than a half when Iowa controlled the time of possession. His nose was broken and he sat out the rest of the game. Even when he did not make sacks he was in the backfield and hurrying plays. Despite being double teamed. Iowa state's offensive line is very makeshift. They will put 2 have to put 2 guys on him and try. That opens things up for Johnson to make plays. Iowa shut down a 2300 yard rusher, and a running QB saturday. The green cyclone running backs will not find any running lanes. Iowa will win the battle in the trench.

Watched both our game and theirs. Thought the pursuit of Iowa's lb's and db's was pretty good but was not impressed w their d line at the "point of attack". Hoping we can run the ball.

Iowa state we to the passing game because they could

It was against a 280lb FCS LT making his first start. yes, the guy was making his first start. Yes, he was 280lbs. The iowa DL went up against a OL with three new starters and an offense with 7 new starters. Hard to tell how good they are or aren't. Just like iSu's DL against UNI

Ott got 13 tackles and a sack against Ball State last year too. Whoopty do.

Jaypee Philbert will get most of the snaps at LT and I predict he will not need help on Ott

That's exactly what was said last year.

Why do you think Iowa ran the ball with a double TE set?mor a TE and FB at same time? Cause they have to. Iowa can't line up with just 5 Oline blocking and run the ball anymore...not with this Oline. Iowa ran ball well against 250lb interior lineman. With 7 guys blocking. When Iowa tried running with just 5 lineman they didn't do so well. ISU D is a whole world different this year than that ILL st. Defense. Not close. I don't care that they shut down a guy who ran for 2300 yds last year because they lost almost the entire Oline and another guy didn't play from being hurt. I think Iowa DE are a year better no doubt..OtT is a stud. However, Jaleel and other dude aren't Carl Davis and Passat.

If you think ISU is going to run ball with 5 lineman u are crazy. You will see double TE formations a lot. And an Oline and TE blocking OtT. I pray that Iowa plays Man on our WRs...won't happen as they sit back there in their little sissy cover 2.

I like this. lol

I have to think that if Iowa stuffs the box, they are going to get destroyed. Good luck containing Bundrage, Lazard, Montgomery, and Daley with 4 guys in zone. Thing is Iowa is only going to stuff the box when the double tight package is on the field. I know this, MM knows this, and anyone with a brain for football knows this. Should be easy to exploit.

I think Iowa's defense will play well, but last year there was nothing to show that Iowa was out matching Iowa State's athleticism. If anything Iowa looked slow in comparison to Iowa State. Not surprising cause I always think the B1G looks like a slow league, except of course when OSU is playing.

In the end Iowa is just too predictable. They will do what they do, and we will exploit it on the edges with superior athletes. That's just the offense.

Our defense looked great, but it was against the spread. I doubt we run the 3-4 this week. I would have the biggest sports boner if we did hold Iowa's O-line with just 3 guys. It's not going to happen though. I look for us to do a ton of run blitzing, and use our speed and size in the secondary to pick of Beathard if Ferentz actually decides to open it up.
That's assuming we can stuff the obvious run. I think we can, after watching our new d-line. We shall see.
