Running game....

By the way, my biggest complaint about that near goal line stand was that we were 7 yds behind the line of scrimmage in shotgun formation AGAIN. I couldn't believe my eyes. Are we never going to learn? We literally had like 6 inches to go for the TD. Put Sam under center and sneak it and end it already. At least we didn't try to throw it and get it picked off there.... I would have lost my mind.

That means we gained 21 yards on the 3 carries.

Wow.... listen to the excuses on here.... short fields, played vanilla, UNI stacked the box, and my absolute favorite was when someone actually tried to use our 3 runs it took to score from the 6 inch line as a positive for our run game because those shouldn't have really counted as carries. Ummm, no.... it is precisely the problem when it takes you 3 tries to go 6 inches on an FCS D line.

Now I will give you that our average yd per rush, after taking Sam's sacks out, wasn't too bad. It wasn't great though either, and probably should be more like 5 or 6 yds per carry against a smallish D line.

We did not play well the first half. We were down 7-0. Bundrage fumbled and UNI recovered and had a short field. The wheels could have come completely off. Instead Pierson made an interception. ISU rallied to take a 10-7 halftime lead despite not playing well offensively. And shut UNI down the rest of the way and went on to a 31-7 win.

So WTF are you complaining about????? Is it that hard for you to enjoy a win???

Or are you just sad that you couldn't continue your unending mantra of going on and on and on and on and on about the last 2 seasons opening game losses?

Because we have to just look at "the run game" as a whole without any type of analysis?

Just because we suck balls on the goalline doesn't mean we suck balls from our own 20 or the 50 yard line. It's totally different. And it should be evaluated differently.

I believe the runs on the goal line were stuffed because UNI had time to run around the tackles and into the backfield.

Says a lot more about the play call than the execution.

clonedude... what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It must really suck hating life as much as you seem to.

I'm actually pretty confident clonedude turned the game off at halftime, which is why he is talking like an idiot. At least I'm assuming he's not this stupid.

:jimlad: he is

You could take out 3 carries from Josh Thomas on the goaline too since they were all from the 1 and that's obviously a specialized situation.

I think we ran the ball pretty well, but not amazingly. Needed more big runs, only got them in the first drive or two.

I was disappointed that we pulled Brown so quickly. Thought he was getting into a great groove then *poof* he's out for several series...

Have to agree with this. Doesn't matter how bad UNI might be....I can't think of a time when ISU has played like crap and still won by 24. Not even the spring scrimmage.

Well I know it won't support your agenda, but Rhoads was asked about that very thing (the shotgun at the goal line) and he was obviously ****** and said it wouldn't happen again.

That's very encouraging as deep handoffs from the shotgun make no sense at the 1 or really in any very short yardage situation. I'll be glad to see Sam under center in those situations in the future. I'm encouraged about our running game, keeping in mind we got a big chunk of our yards on our first play (about 40 yards I think). Imo the jury is still out and we'll find out a lot more this Saturday against what should be a better defense.

The running back can actually be closer in a shotgun formation than with your qb under center.... Or the same distance.

The problem was with using the pistol

Iowa is going to stuff what little there is of the cyclone running game. The cyclone offense will become one dimensional. That will play into the strength of the Iowa defense. Ott will be applying pressure all game long. It does not look good for the cyclone offense.

In addition to the qb sneak threat it shortens the time it takes the back to get to the hole as the qb gets the ball quicker under center and the back can move forward with the snap.
