Running game....

Just watched the cyclone express replay with JW and EH for fun an decided to just watch the Oline and Dline basically that's it. Couple thoughts. Our run game wasn't that bad. Yea we only had 77 yds net rushing but take Sam out and our RBs had 98 yds on 22 carries. That's 4.45 YPC avg. honestly we didn't run the ball that much. Not sure why because that first couple series Tyler Brown was running well, the we just stopped basically and threw a lot. We also had very short fields entire game. What I noticed was that when we wanted to run we had many 3-6 yd carries and folks that just didn't happen last year unless it was some draw on 3rd and 20. Most times on 1st down when we lined up in a big set and ran the ball we got a decent run and sometimes the hole was huge. Do we have a ways to go...sure but it was a heck of a lot better than previous years in game 1. And without arguably our best lineman in Burton.

Dline..dominance. No other way to put it. UNI Oline was young and inexperienced but guess what so was our Dline. We had 5 of our front 7 playing their first game..that's young..and we dominated UNI. Just go back and watch the replay and notice on nearly every play our Dline just shoved their Oline back 3-5 yds on nearly every play. When Jhausten gets his hands on you he just mauled his guy. Tucker is an absolute beast...the guy doesn't stop and runs down every play no matter where he is or where the ball is. I'm anxious to see how we do this week and with Taylor back to boot.

One last thing..I have little respect for UNI. There where several occasions in the 2nd half where the UNI lineman got beat so bad he just dove at the back of our players legs. Gabe Luna almost got injured bad and could have been done for the year. Just go watch late 2nd half. I realize it's football but every time we play UNI their cut blocks and clips get old. Ok I'm done. On to beating the Squawks!

Just wanted to give my opinion that our run game was actually not bad.

You could take out 3 carries from Josh Thomas on the goaline too since they were all from the 1 and that's obviously a specialized situation.

I think we ran the ball pretty well, but not amazingly. Needed more big runs, only got them in the first drive or two.

Agree we need get better and as long as this line stays healthy I think it will..but we got those 3,4,5 yd runs on 1st down many times and that's what u need to do. We just didn't run much.

Yep. Rarely got tackled for a loss and set ourselves up to move the chains. That's the first step to a good running game. Explosive runs will come.
 
Also keep in mind that the offense, on a lot of those plays, was working with a small amount of field. Shorter drives as a result of great defense and special teams led to less yards.
 
I think the key to our run game is to maintain a healthy and consistent O-Line. They need to have a few games together to gel and I think they'll be fine. We aren't off to the best start though with Burton's unknown situation.

I agree. I'm not sure why we went away from the run either. I know that Mangino is a great offensive coach, but sometimes I don't know why he does what he does.

And I completely agree about the UNI players. I think they always play relatively dirty. Mark Farley is a bit of an ******* from what I've heard (I know someone that worked as a student in the Athletic Department of UNI).

Yea there was one series where we had 1st down and ran for like 6 yds, then ran again for 3 yds and on 3rd and like 2 we ran a 3rd time in same spot and UNI was waiting for it and I was like...boy a play action would have done well there.
 
We are doing UNI a favor by scheduling them; and they are not fully attending the game. If they are deliberately trying to injure our players, we should replace them with North Texas, Northern Illinois, Memphis, Cincinnati, ....
 
My belief

The run game was working really well, but the passing game was way off. It showed on the first and second series as we were unable to move the ball through the air. I believe we came out the second series to get Sam in a rhythm. He miss Lazard in the end zone, threw one in the ground for a WR screen and just looked uncomfortable.

With the lack of success at the beginning, UNI started to line up to stop the run, forcing us to pass. The second half we were able to take off and open up the game a lot more. So we then used the pass to balance out the run which I think was the gameplan the whole game. This why we opened with a play action pass out of a tight single back 12 personnel.

No expert, just my two cents.

I know nothing of Iowa's team, but if we have any shot at running, I could see us using that more to our advantage after the success we had.
 
We need to average at least 150 yards rushing, regardless of team, short field, opponent etc. just to be competitive. 180+ to rip some throats.


If we start moving to a 150 average then I will be happy.
 
Some here would say the reluctance to run was because MM knew they could run all over UNI so they abandoned it as to not show Iowa too much.

I would like to believe this, but let's be honest it was 10-7 at halftime. And even if they had hit the FG's it would have only been 16-7---still not a blowout. And considering that we needed to win in the worst way, I sort of doubt that we held much back.

I suspect that UNI was stacking the box, daring SR to beat them with his arm. Seems like I have seen this used before.
 
Wow.... listen to the excuses on here.... short fields, played vanilla, UNI stacked the box, and my absolute favorite was when someone actually tried to use our 3 runs it took to score from the 6 inch line as a positive for our run game because those shouldn't have really counted as carries. Ummm, no.... it is precisely the problem when it takes you 3 tries to go 6 inches on an FCS D line.

Now I will give you that our average yd per rush, after taking Sam's sacks out, wasn't too bad. It wasn't great though either, and probably should be more like 5 or 6 yds per carry against a smallish D line.

By the way, my biggest complaint about that near goal line stand was that we were 7 yds behind the line of scrimmage in shotgun formation AGAIN. I couldn't believe my eyes. Are we never going to learn? We literally had like 6 inches to go for the TD. Put Sam under center and sneak it and end it already. At least we didn't try to throw it and get it picked off there.... I would have lost my mind.

Well I know it won't support your agenda, but Rhoads was asked about that very thing (the shotgun at the goal line) and he was obviously ****** and said it wouldn't happen again.
