Rodney Coe?

Does anyone think us going after Coe means the coaching staff is losing faith in Irving developing into what they thought he would? I'm assuming Coe will switch to DE? Maybe I'm just reading too much into it but it doesn't seem like the staff has been very positive on Irving lately

You are reading too much into it... there is no "maybe" about it.

He's an 18 year old DE for crying out loud. It's like everyone expects him to be Jason Pierre-Paul this year. Cripes.

Or maybe having two 280 lb DE's gets the staff happy in their pants?

This. Rhoads has said many times that the light comes on for people at different times. Irving is still relatively new to the game of football. It took 2 years in the system for JG to "get it" so give Irving a little more time before people start labeling him as a bust.

Part of the problem is that we, as fans, heard the coaches talking so highly about him last year that we expect so much more this year. But what we fail to understand is that the coaches were talking about the football player he could be, not the football player that he is now.

Yeah, all of the staffs comments regarding Irving this year should have braced people for what has played out to this point. He probably won't play every down and he probably won't be a dominant force this year. This isn't a knock on him. It's the fact that he plays a very tough position, he hasn't played football long, and he's a young sophomore. He will contribute, perhaps significantly but he isn't likely to be All Big 12.

You can't enough enough guys like Irving and Coe at DE. Rhoads talked at the CF Recruitment Day party that he was very pleased with the defensive line recruits because it is hard to find guys who come in with the physical attributes he wants.

He has some potential to be very special. For instance, if he can develop good timing, he could be awesome in terms of knocking down passes and being very disruptive on pass plays to his side.

Don't recall saying the staff should cut him because he isn't an all-american. Sheesh the way some of you guys over react on this board is ridiculous. Just a simple question looking for someones input.

I would have to say your original post was more of an overreaction than any other post in this thread.

Can you explain? I simply don't understand I guess. CPR has said Irving isn't developing as quickly as they would have liked. That's as negative as a quote as I think I have ever seen. Why is simply posing a question asking for other peoples an opinion an over reaction? Did I say he wasn't developing? Did I say he sucked? Did I say he will never contribute. No I simply posed a hypothetical situation

It's moreso because Bevins, Meyers, and Aka all appear to be growing into DTs.
