Not that we need another fire Rhoads thread or anything but I haven't seen much of anything talking about Rhoads stubbornness to embrace current trends when it comes to relating with recruits. One of the biggest things that stands out to me is his refusal to have a Twitter account, this alone closes off a huge recruiting/pr avenue along with distancing himself from the culture that high school kids want to see in a program these days. The sad thing is he wouldn't even have to run it just have his name on it. Along the same lines his very public refusal to embrace edgy uniforms also distances himself from players/potential recruits. Kids want the hot new gear that makes a statement which is the opposite of ISU's current uniforms. Rhoads also doesn't even have the canned excuse of tradition on this as isu has changed looks so many times. To me these are just two cases that show how his stubbornness to adapt to the ever changing cfb landscape prevent him from being an great coach for Iowa State.

I agree. I know there are people that will pooh pooh the whole edgy uniform thing, but I think that it does matter at least somewhat.

Also, Rhoads plays the music he wants the team to enter to, not with what the team wants. Many of these kids don't even know "Smoke on the Water" or care about it.

We have enough built in recruiting disadvantages the way it is.... but then to be stubborn to the fact that today's younger generation likes to wear the latest cool uniforms, don't care for 70's classic rock, etc, etc, etc.... doesn't help our situation at all.

Rhoads and JP are actually worried about creating a brand? Seriously? We don't have a brand, and never will. We are the definition of a school that doesn't have a brand. So why not change things up?

Schools like Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas, Florida, Miami, etc, etc, etc have all embraced using alternate uniforms, etc..... but ISU has too much of a brand to protect? Seriously?

Edgy Uniforms...tell that to the Alabama Crimson Tide recruits who opt for the same dull boring non edgy uniforms that Joe Namath wore......

It's GEOGRAPHY boys and we are way out in north field in the big xii conferene.....

Its going to take awhole lot better coach than paul rhoads to bring a winner to ISU

Path to successful football coaching career:

Step 1) create Twitter account
Step 2) pink uniforms

Hell yes recruits and players love the uniform combo's. I work at a D2 school that has more uni combo's than ISU and the players love them. Recruits these days love pimped out locker rooms and things like that. Be different! Be unique!

Alabama doesn't need to wear edgy uniforms.... that's the entire point that you seem to be missing.

The day when ISU can recruit on just all their national titles, their amazing stadium and facilities, and their location... will be the day I say that ISU doesn't have to pull out all the stops to get recruits.

I would love for a big school to take a chance on someone from the staff down here at Northwest. Maybe not head coach but somewhere on the staff. They had two freaking NFL corners last year. Joel Osborn from Harlan does a stellar job as the recruiting coordinator down here.

NO I'm not missing anything but what you are missing is that college football is all about GEOGRAPHY.

If we were located in ft worth tx we would be just as good as thee horn froggies IT"S GEOGRAPHY.......

This X 2. People need to talk to Joel and they would say are you selling something, if you are can I buy it? He is a chip off the old block.

I've worked down here for four years. This freaking staff is amazing. Coach T's rebuilding job down here is comparative in college football history with that of Bill Snyder. Dorrell has done a good job since taking over. They had 5 guys last year on defense that would have started at ISU(and Collin Bevins didn't even start last year after transferring, whats that say). Their DE Matt Longacre (Millard West) is better than any player we have on that side of the ball.

Well there's nothing we can do about our location, so...

Not sure if serious. Our coaches are a 10th as good as theirs.

Bingo! He still doesn't get it. He's making my argument for me.

We don't have GEOGRAPHY. I get that. Does capitalizing it help? All the more reason why you need to try different avenues when recruiting. We cannot sell a recruit on our warm weather and hot coeds. Sorry, we just can't. Maybe someday we can if climate change turns us into Florida?

But that is all the more reason why you HAVE to pull out all the stops in recruiting. Like uniforms, gameday music and atmosphere, facilities, you name it. Try everything.

Agreed but we can't change geography. So you better be doing every other thing possible to assure you of every player you can! Have to!

He's a great guy and the players love him. Joel is brilliant at identifying and evaluating talent. We lack facilities the facilities of other programs even in the conference and this is still a machine down here year after year. Everybody always talks about the job that Brian Kelly and other coaches did in d2 but never seem to give credit to the staff at Northwest. Adam Dorrel is head and shoulders a better coach than Paul Rhoads i'll tell you that now. Love Dorrell's offense too.

What kind of offense does he run? I definitely would consider him. Why not?

There is way too much hype about hiring some "big" name coach who you will likely overpay to land. I don't care what their name is, I want a guy that knows football, and knows what a good football player looks like.

That's why I respect Craig Bohl. That guy understands football and is hard nosed.

This is the 2009 when Dorrel was the OC. Packages and formations are still pretty similar but things usually change with personnel. They threw a lot in this particular year , but have leaned a little more on the run the last few years. The run philosophy now is a little different than in the video. They now run more misdirection and veer, but they HIT THE HOLES. This staff absolutely adapts. Dorrel was an All-American OL here. I added one of him explaining blocking too.

Alabama has a top 5 brand in the country. That's why they can afford to have old style unis. And they still do pro combat IIRC.

Foolish of ISU to sit back and do almost nothing to try to make the program look more appealing. We need all the help we can get.

Some might call it laziness not to change....

Paul is too old school and needs an upgrade/reboot.

"Get with the program, Paul, by going ALL IN with the kids."
