Rhoads> Ferentz???

So Ferentz is the 35th best coach. Not sure I buy that Charlie Weis has three top 20 finishes since 2004 (Ferentz has two 2008 and 2009)

So that's how we evaluate coaches now for the 2013 season? How many top 20 finishes they've had in the last 9 years?

That's the list of coaches who have finished higher than 20th twice since '04.

Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, Brian Kelly, Mark Richt, Kevin Sumlin, David Shaw, Steve Spurrier, Jimbo Fischer, Bill Snyder, Les Miles, Bob Stoops, Chris Petersen, Mack Brown, Mike Gundy, Bobby Petrino, Mark Dantonio, Bret Bielema, Gary Patterson, Frank Beamer, Jim Tresell, Gary Pinkel, Bo Pelini, Urban Meyer, Joe Paterno, Bronco Mendenhall, Kyle Wittingham, Houston Nutt, Pete Carroll, Mike Bellotti, Mike Leach, Rich Rodriguez, Tommy Tubberville, Lloyd Carr, Charlie Weiss
Might want to cut that down to current coaches. Pretty irrelevant to throw in a bunch of coaches that don't coach anymore when talking about current coaches.

that was never my position just wanted the person who took that position to back it up and he has. Although I'm not sure this supports his position as much as he thinks it does.

Kirk Ferentz isn't on that list so it's obviously not a complete list.

Of the current head coaches who have two or more finishes in the top 20 Ferentz would fall somewhere inside the top 30. That's probably about where I'd put him anyway. Some coaches on that list I'd put behind him, some not on the list I'd put ahead of him.

Yeah, 8 years went by. The game has passed Ferentz by, he was able to lose the program and turn it back around once already, don't see him being able to do it again.

He's done it twice, if you count 2008 and 2009. I've got serious doubts that he can do it again, though.

In 2004, Iowa was in perfect position to step up and be the third Big Ten power. They were coming off three straight top 8 finishes, returned most of their key players and had a stellar recruiting class coming in. They let it slip away. Then they had a similar chance after winning the Orange Bowl. They let that opportunity slip away, too. Meanwhile Wisconsin, a program that was neck and neck with Iowa in 2004, had the same chance and jumped all over it.

Maybe Ferentz can get the program back to where it was a few years ago. But I think we've already seen the peak of the Ferentz era.

It was 2005 that they were coming off 3 straight top 8 finishes, and they really didn't return as many key players as you may think. For me, the key players on that 2004 team were the d-line, Hodge/Greenway, Tate, and Considine in that order. The 2005 team only returned Tate, Hodge, & Greenway from that list.

Can we all agree that he USED to be a good coach and leave it at that?

That was my bad. I meant right after the Capitol One Bowl.

It appears that the young infusion of coaching talent may be a little late. It is almost as if Kirk is now suffering from the same issue as McDermott did while it isu. Remember McDermott had the Wes thing that really rippled through program to brackens era as players lost confidence and respect. It seems the era of that top rated recruiting class has crushed the "spirit" of the program. Seems to have an uphill battle to get back to leadership in conference.

Not really sure I am sold on Brian Kelly but KF makes a ton more money than him. Kind of shocked he makes more than Spurrier.

All this being said, I hope he never leaves the Hoks.

Charlie Weis at 106 made me very happy.

Now we can scientifically prove that Kansas football can cure a 24/7 Patriots/Irish media boner in just over 24 months.

He certainly wasn't 106 coming into KU, he was going to storm the Big 12, what changed? The great news for KU football is that Weis has told all incoming recruits that his goal is to quit in 2 or 3 years, that'll fix everything.

I'm not so sure Charlie Weis won't bring KU to respectability. One of his big problems at ND was he coached like a fan would, going for silly things like 4th and 4 in the first half in his own territory. I don't think he will have the same fan mentality at KU as he had at his alma mater.

I'd argue that CPR doing that at ISU is the reason we can now win any given Saturday where Mac and Chiz started the game with an automatic loss going against a top 25 team because they coached like ISU was the inferior team every snap, especially if we managed to snag a lead.

There's nowhere to go but up and they were competitive in losses except for ISU and a couple others last year though.
