Ref Attacked After the Buzzer

If those were your kids/players (as a coach, admin whatever) would you have done something or would you have just strolled around (possibly not sure if the adult that strolls out late in the video is involved or not)? Someone with what should be authority is getting chased and beaten and no one does a thing and/or laughs.

That's a culture thing that is not happening anywhere I have ever been.

That makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

I probably would've tried to break it up. But, I probably would've been ganged up on and had the you know what kicked out of me.

BS. It's everywhere and not just a "culture" thing, and it's happening everywhere - including in IA. Our society is becoming more emboldened and almost bullying toward others. This is a direct result of current norms and not just in one demographic (as it seems that is what you're really trying to infer - shameful).

People not wanting to ref is justified by this type of thing but also just having to deal with the crap between players/parents etc. would not be worth it.

That kid assaulting another in Iowa this past winter in the hand shake line is just one other example.

I'm also exhausted by the 'film with my phone instead of doing something about it' trend.

This type of thing also can affect coaching numbers as well for youth leagues. I don't want to be the coach that all the parents are constantly calling/emailing/harassing me about their kid's playing time or how I coach.

Or holding them accountable.

It's not new as it was going on plenty for forever but it seems to just get worse all the time.

Some of the comments are disturbing as well, not that anyone would be surprised by that nowadays. One of them said something like, "If you haven't been screwed over by a ref you shouldn't comment because you don't understand."

One of my crew mates was assaulted after a post-season game in Waterloo several years ago. He's 6-7 and a former college football player. I'm 5-9 and our other partner was 5-6, so I don't know why he chose him. The school's AD, who was also a pretty big dude, took the guy down and held him on the ground so we could get to our car. Unfortunately most of my peers have at least one story like this.
I did Iowa high school baseball for a decade. I have a story like this. Two dad's of a team that blew a 10 run lead in the 5th went apeshit and were waiting for my buddy and I as we were leaving the field. Thankfully, the AD followed us out, gave a box full of brats and Gatorade and said "get in your car and get the hell out of here".

People attacking refs, agreed. People attacking refs with ZERO intervention is not happening everywhere.

That video is just sad, no one cares to help the man, some are celebrating what the players did. This wasn't one bad kid.
To at least defend some of the fans not helping:
*Most of the fans were up above and I'm not sure how they get down to the lower part.
*Also, there is another game going on at another court right next to it so likely half the people didn't even realize that was happening until it spread to that side.
*I would be afraid to step in and try to help the poor referee in that situation. There were multiple people attacking that ref and they likely would have seriously hurt me. Saying you would have stepped in to try and break it up would have been easier said than done.

I gotta hear about this.
It was several years ago. I was at the state meet on the mat taking photos and the lady, probably 250 pounds leaped over the ropes and just flattened the ref. The son began crying and told someone next to me that she had done it before at a meet earlier in the season. One other time not long ago an angry dad took after a ref at a wrestling tournament and fortunately he escaped before someone grabbed the dad. The worst games for people acting up that I see are junior high basketball and AAU baseball tournaments for 12U.

That brings up the question of how was she even allowed to be there if she had done this before?

  • Agree

She was banned from tournaments, but apparently the word didn't get to the state. Easy to enforce until you get to state.
