The name and logo...ugh.

I don’t understand what’s so bad about the name. Sure, it was a safe choice (as it probably should have been), but It fits the city, it’s tough, it’s original among major sports franchises, and fits in with other names in the league.
The jerseys on the other hand, are not great, but those’ll change with time like many other teams do. There’s lots of cool touches, such as the bars above and below “Commanders” that pay homage to the DC flag, or the dates on the crest that tie in the team’s history to the new brand, or the stars that appear on both the DC and U.S. flags. I think too many people already made their minds up that they weren’t going to like it before anything was released.

There’s nothing inherently bad about it; it’s just “meh”, especially when there were better options thrown around, like Red Tails or Red Hogs.
Then again, it fits the theme of “meh” names for Washington teams: Nationals, Wizards, Capitals, and now Commies… err… Commanders.
I think part of it is just that most professional teams' nicknames sound kind of ridiculous without context or history behind them. Imagine if a team came out with a name like "Red Sox" or "Packers" today. Unlike college nicknames, there's an expectation of being original, but teams also don't want to be too risky and pick a completely original name that might get even more blowback. In a couple years, no one will care about it or make fun of it unless Dan Snyder does something stupid again (which I guess is pretty likely).
Commanders is generic, but it could be worse.

Chose the lamest/least-creative of the bunch.

Before the Wizards it was the Bullets right? And they got rid of that because of all the murders in and around DC committed by guns/bullets?
I agree with those of you who liked it as The Washington Football Team. So, for a mascot will it be a commander in chief? A guy in a suit with aviator sunglasses? Or a general? A guy wearing a military uniform? (really not serious about either, just making a lame joke)
A line had to be drawn somewhere. And wherever that line is drawn, Marion Barry is ready.
Bobcats is pretty generic/feels like a high school team. There's a reason MJ went back to the Hornets.
Stallions is relatively generic and there are already a lot of horse-themed teams in the NFL (Broncos, Colts, and Chargers by my reckoning), but it at least feels like a pro football name. There was almost a "St. Louis Stallions" in the mid-90s that lost out to the Jaguars and the Panthers for expansion.
Wildcatters would have been a good replacement for the "Oilers."
Apollos is nice, too.
I don't hate Texans. It is a name that has seen frequent deployment throughout the history of professional football, including the AFL Dallas Texans. I just wish it were for like San Antonio or Austin instead of Houston when Houston has so many more options invoking its region rather than Texas generally.
Should have been Red Tails. Would of been historic and honoring a great group of men.
