Recruiting "expert" Tom Lemming's take on Mac

I think when he starts looking for a new job, he'll be hanging out a lot with Morgan because there isn't going to be a slew of calls. Michigan State is looking for a new coach after season, are they going to hire him?..... Uh, no.

Why do people assume that Mac was the only coach in the world that could've ever gotten ISU outta the rutt that we were in? A lot of coaches couldve done the same thing IMO if given the chance. it shows how bad our previous coaches were and the athletic departments philosophies on the football program. Did they do anything to try and improve it before Mac was here, like new facilities, marketing etc. ???
I appreciate Mac and will always have a soft spot for him, but a change is needed. Hell, if in 5-10 years if we get to another level i say lets put up a plaque or name something after Mac, just to honor him and to show appreciation for what he has done.

Fact: He has been fighting for championships the last 2 seasons.

Say what you want about choking in those seasons, easy schedule, down years in the conference and underachieving this year (and I agree), but to say we will not be fighting for championships after doing it 2 of the past three years is kind of unfair (although it may be true).

At the very least, we need to overhaul the offensive coaches and maybe a new head coach is the right call. I don't know.

The fact also is that both of those were handed to us on a platter. We weren't in control of our destiny as much as all the cards fell into place. Teams lost that had to lose and we didin't win the games we had to. You start your conference schedule 0-3 and you are not fighting for anything except the hope that a few other teams lose to put you in position to pull something out of the hat at the end. Put NU, CU or KSU back to the teams they were in the 90s and then say we are still fighting for Conference Championships, that's something. Finishing 4-4 in the division and getting a share of the title is not fighting for a championship. That's merely playing .500 ball and getting lucky you still had a shot at the title game. No matter how it's spun 4-4 is mediocre football. Actually sub par if you look at our schedule those last two years.

Lemming has a vested interested in supporting coaches. His service is sold to colleges as well as fans. I believe Jim Walden stated ISU was a customer of Lemming's several years ago. I don't know if they still are. Lemming is hardly an unbiased "expert".

Coach Mac thank you for doing everything you have done for the program and we are greatful for it all. You've had chances the past 3 years to do something more special and take us farther and haven't done it and it's time to part ways. Good luck in your future and thank you again for everything you have done.

I agree that it was disappointing, but we were "fighitng for a championship". Everything did fall into place that year. And nothing is falling into place this year. And just like people can say we are 3 plays from being winless this year, we were a handful of plays from being undefeated in the Big 12 last year. Heck, if we had pulled out any one of those games last year, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Exactly, but we didn't and here we are:sad9cd:

I tell you one thing, I sick of hearing how well McCarney does with the players he is able to get. Imagine if he had an ounce of recruiting ability, where would we be.

The reason why we assume that about Mac is because he was the only one with the guts to come here to ames where there was no tradition whatsoever and he got us halfway. there is not a single decent head coach that would have come in here 12 years ago.

deace said rumor is michigan st. is interested in hiring mac away from us. wouldn't that solve a LOT of problems...

honestly, i think mac should take it if it's offered. prove us wrong.

We're Not Far from the Bottom

I doubt that we would drop to the bottom again, but we will be consistently sitting in the middle and that bowl/no bowl border, and not fighting for championships.

If we finish 0-8 in the Big 12, we would be one of the worst BCS conference teams. Personally, I have a tough time seeing ISU returning to a bowl game in the near future. Maybe there are some great true & redshirt freshman, but I just don't see Mac even getting us back to mediocre.

I would disagree 100% about Lemming's statement that ISU was the 117th best program when mac took over. That would mean ISU was worse than all the mid-major programs in the nation. ISU was horrible and if compared against it's peers in the Big East, Big Ten, Big 8, SWC, ACC, SEC & Pac 10 the Clones would have been among a handful of bad, bad programs.

not that stupid? they hired john l. smith who was underwhelming at lousiville... and that was after they figured they weren't gonna get mac from isu

Yet another person who may not know everything there is about Iowa State, but who knows a heck of a lot about college football, trying to tell ISU fans to calm down and think it through. The grass is always greener on the other side, until you get over there. Noone is happy with the current state of affairs, but one or two coordinators could make the difference.
