Recruiting at ISU

North Dakota State. Ames is paradise compared to this place. Apparently they manage to get good players and lots of them.

Those that list facilities in threads like this are missing the fact that the upgrades have caught ISU up to the middle of the pack, not set them apart.

Yeah, probably has a lot to do with the fact that Fred's guys don't play outdoors. Maybe!

Our guys play football outdoors on average of 2 cold days per year. This year it is on Nov 22 and Nov 29. The other days we can use our indoor practice facility.

You can't win at a place like Ames if you think that every under the radar player that walks into the program is going to turn into Jake Knott. Any coach that comes in here will have to use JUCO's to make up for the gap.

Look at budgets. Look at alumi donation levels vs the size of the institution. Then try to tell me again that we as fans are doing all we can.

Who are our alumni?
Do we have alumni who are rich as T Boone Pickens or Red McCombs? Who are our main boosters? Who are our average supporters? How much disposable income they can spend?

We don't have rich boosters like Texas, OSU or OU. Are our alumni mostly doctors, lawyers, fund managers who can regularly dish out a lot of money?

I just have one thing to say about recruiting to Ames, IA/ISU. How easy do you think it is to recruit to NDSU or UNI. UNI beat us a couple of years ago. North Dakota is a hell of a lot colder than Ames. Have you been to the Dakotas. Not that exciting. We got killed by NDSU. They had better players. UNI then beats them 23 to 3. Plus they have just 63 players instead of 85. So, what conference could this team compete in???? Missouri Valley??? Maybe small schools like Grandview or is it Drake?????? The other thing is injuries. What team doesn't have injuries. What is the excuse for the first game with NDSU or the year before with UNI??????

Not really apples to apples is it. Were either of these teams built while playing six ranked teams practically every year. How many times has UNI beat Iowa? Are you saying Bill Snyder can't coach because they lost to NDSU? Seems to me what NDSU and UNI have in common are stability in coaching. They've played in the same system for years. Let's see, the NDSU game was the first game with an entirely new offense for us. Seems to me your making more of a case to keep Rhoads.

I agree with everything you said OP. The one thing I'd point out that deserves consideration, though, is that while Ames does have a lot to offer, that may not be the perception of a kid from Cali, Fla, or TX...or anywhere farther away than a state out from Iowa. I hear it all the time. While it helps to get kids on campus, even that has proven to be a difficult sell, even when the trip is friggin FREE. Our recruiting game has to be stepped up in a big way. We need some top notch sales men, as you alluded to, that can conjure up a grand vision and impart that to some quality recruits.....oh yeah, and that can coach some football, too.

We are a Big 12 school in Big 10 country. We can't get kids in campus. The Big 10 rules the industrial Midwest (where the limited talent is) and the Texas kids we may have a shot with because of our affiliation never get to fully see what we have to offer.

Yep. Yet another couple reasons it's difficult to recruit at ISU. We gotta find a though, or it's going to continue to be more of the same.

From an ex intern with the football program when Chizik was here. There are 3 main obstructions in the way that make recruiting at Iowa State difficult. 1. Is the ethnicity of our team. Most good southern football teams are predominantly african-american, while the Iowa State football team is about half and half. Our campus is extremely white with the highest number of minorities being of asain background. Half of the team plays country music while lifting, and the other half want hip-hop and R&B 2. Our climate and snow. 3. Distance from major recruiting cities, and lack of easy access to Ames. The Des Moines airport is the best way to get here from Florida, Texas, and California. That still leaves a 45 commute from getting your bags and then driving to the stadium/ campus area.

Iowa State can become an above average football team. With our improving facilities and Big 12 money the chances will be there. It is just a matter of either some Big 12 teams having down years, and us having an experienced veteran group with a quarterback who plays at Seneca's level. Our 9 game conference schedule will never be easy. Even OU has 3 conference losses after beating Bama in a BCS bowl last year.

Recruiting + Development = ISU. I think CPR and staff have had okay classes, but the development seems to be MIA. Certain players have not progressed like we thought. Is it the player? The coach? What?

Our receiving corps seem like an easy group to pick on. A talented group, but the problems each year seem to stay the same. Can't get open. Can't beat press coverage. Can't break a tackle. Cant' consistently catch the ball. Every season this group has hype, and every season we scratch our heads as to why they suck.

I am sorry, but blaming this on recruiting is a joke, this is straight up players not playing to either potential. Along with a lack of depth because of all the transfers from his tenure. I honestly think that CPR recruiting classes have been much better for the make-up of Big 12, recent classes have been very focused on JUCO ranks to make up for the team departures (almost an ala K-state direction).... I have been a Rhoads coolaid drinker from the begining. I still have faith he can do something similar to what Snyder has done at K-State, to echo this a little more, the lack of depth that K-state has is pretty visible and probably has similar fall-off after key injuries, it is more that the past few years they have had the luck of not running into that issue.... Seeley does not have anywhere close to the experience and vision of the game that Miller has, than add the DL injuries to the mix and you have newbie LBer and a week 5th string DL, if I were Tech I would run the ball all day in 2 weeks. Plus ad the 3-and-outs to start the game and of course the defense would get wore out.... This year is a write off for me, I hope we can get tech and me more competitive the last 2. I will be in attendance with bells on, and give up till this seasons through, but I hope something comes together this week.....
