Recruit Lists v2.0

Exactly what I was saying to Cydkar. Sure, in hindsight you can see players that were not appropriately ranked, the few exceptions, but that is not recruiting. Cydkar is one of those stars don't matter, point to an anomaly types. If hindsight was logic, we would all be rich.

Where did you get that from? I'm pretty much the opposite...I'm a star watching/top 150 guy all the way. I've been following recruiting since the 80's. I even lined Van Coleman's pockets subscribing to his newsletter back in the day.

Cleanthony Early is an extremely rare occurrence in college basketball. He already an NBA-ready body coming in and was able to really showcase his abilities at a mid-major school. He and Wichita State were a match made in heaven.

This Malik Allen or whatever is probably barely 6 feet tall, probably takes a lot of shots, and probably turns the ball over a lot. Undersized, underskilled, but not under controlled. I understand we need bodies on the practice squad, but I'd be hesitant to throw a schollie at the kid. We don't really need a < 6'0'' guard on this team unless he's the second coming of Tyrus McGee (and I'd wager to believe this Malik kid is closer to KJ Bluford).

Let's just say stars don't guarantee or preclude a player from being good or bad, but over time recruiting players with more stars will be better.

If you give me a 20 sided die, and you get a 6 sided one we can roll once and you can beat me, but roll 100 times and I'm guaranteed to win.

Neither of those points is really arguable either. Let's leave it at that.

I'd say this is arguable; you wouldn't be guaranteed to win, but it would be highly probable.

I don't think we're going to be after any more high-schoolers for this class. That sail has shipped.

I think you're right in that we probably won't target any new HS recruits. But if they're guys we were originally targets and they re-open their recruitment, why wouldn't we take a shot?

I am of the opinion that there were weren't any other real "targets" besides Vaughn and the plan was always see what Vaughn does, if he comes, go get some transfers, if he doesn't come, go get some transfers. Stick with the gameplan.

I know you are, which is why I am giving you are hard time about the Early comment. It is the same thing- we only know Early was that good in hindsight. On average pedigree matters.

Remember before the Bluford and Gibson transfers there was only one scholarship available for a HS (excluding Custer who a top target of CFH and fills a need at Backup PG). The only type of player next years team is "missing" is a slashing rim finishing 2 guard (ala Kane) who can start right a way. Basically Vaughn for HS players available or a 5th year transfer type such as Bryce Djean-Jones. No sense in getting a commitment from a fringe 150 player to develop especially with Fred already having a player like that in SDW entering his third year at that time.

Fred recruited Early so I knew he was probably pretty good. He's definitely an outlier from a DIII sense.

Yes, that I agree with. The coaches recruiting a guy is the most important aspect, although I doubt any recruiting service is going to keep a guy a two star if guys like Self, Izzo, Coack K are offering.

I'm interested to see who the staff goes after the hardest this spring and summer. I imagine with recruiting opening back up we will find out who are the top targets pretty fast

Read the Potential Transfers and Bryce Desean-Jones threads. You're looking at our target list there.
