Recruit Lists v2.0

My reasoning is this: If the kid is truly as good as advertised and he gets to learn from Fred for a year, he'll most likely throw his hat in the ring for the draft or go play-for-pay elsewhere. Especially, if his grades aren't very good. Maybe I'm wrong and he sticks around.

You could be right, but I look at it like this. Better he gray shirt hear than get a scholly elsewhere. We've got better odds if he does ever play college ball, then at least it should be for us.

If this works out with Malou (greyshirt, then convert to full scholly in the future) we'll stop being called 'Transfer U' and become 'Greyshirt U'.

Which I have no problem with, as long as we end up on the winning side. Honestly, I think this just speaks to the mentoring abilities and general good nature of CFH and this program - you can come to ISU and get a jump start on LIFE, not just a good college or NBA career.

I don't think it's a case of his grades not being very good. I think it's a case of him coming over from Australia and not being able to get past the clearinghouse with certain classes. Same thing happened to Jamie Vanderbeken when he commited to Iowa. He was a 4.0 student in Canada. However 2 courses would not transfer over to our system. Advantage ISU.

Does a grey shirt count towards our scholarships for the 2014-15 season? Does it count as 1 year out of his 5 years of eligibility just like a red shirt?

It has no impact on our scholarship situation if he's enrolled, but paying his own way next year.

If he has good enough grades to attend ISU on a gray shirt then shouldn't he be eligible anyways? I mean if he is enrolled then he should be eligible so why gray shirt?

I actually don't have any idea how a gray shirt works exactly so maybe I'm completely off in my thinking.

I've been reading up on grey shirts.

If a player grey shirts this doesn't mean that he is on scholarship. Players that grey shirt are on campus and are either not taking classes, or taking classes part time. When they take classes part time they pay their own way. A grey shirt doesn't count as a year of eligibility. For your eligibility clock to start you have to be enrolled in classes full time. To receive a scholarship you also have to be enrolled in classes full time.

So more or less Malou would come to Iowa State next season. He would not be on scholarship. He would be a part time student, and he would be paying his own way. He would not be able to practice with the team. His eligibility clock would not start until the 2015-16 season.

I'm guessing the reason he is going to do this is to prove to the staff that he can pass college classes before they give him a scholarship.

So if this news is true Malou is our first class of 2015 commit.

So if he grey shirts would he be eligible the second semester or does he have to sit out the whole year. Unkown territory in basketball. Usually it's football and there is no second semester football.

I would assume that he would be on scholarship starting the 2015-16 season unless we don't fill all of our class of 2014 slots. But if we don't fill them all then yeah he could be eligible the second semester. We will already have McKay becoming eligible at semester though, so I doubt that we would need to add Malou too at that point.

He'd be pretty old by te time he'd be able to play wouldn't he?
Older than your conventional freshman, perhaps, but that is pretty common anymore.

Can he take a few classes at ISU as a part-time student or a non-degree seeking student though? In football grayshirts sometimes take classes at DMACC and/or go part-time to ISU.

So has Malou officially committed as a 2015 recruit or does he wait to officially commit next year when he is on campus?

This is definitely one of the most unique recruitments I've seen.

If this is true, I don't see him ever play for ISU. Just my opinion.

I kind of agree with you, he might be coming here to work on his game with Fred and coaches, but gotta wonder if he ever gets cleared to play by the NCAA or just jumps to a pro league.

Seems we have not done well with recruit's that had clearing house issues, maybe I only remember the ones that did not go our way.. Didn't Floyd recruit a kid that was gonna be the next big thing only to have it go south due not have the right classes or eligibility issues.

That said nothing ventured nothing gained, if he does somehow become eligible sounds like a big time talent. And while he cannot practice with the team, nobody said he could not play some pick up games at one of the local courts. We really are out nothing if he shows up on campus

In this situation, he would not be getting any assistance from an athletic scholarship. I would not rule out the possibility, however, that he might not be eligible for some other type of financial assistance. If he is not officially on the team, there are other options that might be available to him.

I think in football graysirts sign a LOI, but just wait to enroll as full-time students.

If the reason for the grayshirt is due to known clearinghouse issues, then why not just sign him as a +1? If we have two open scholarships, we sign two other recruits plus Malou, with Malou as the planned player to not be on scholarship in the numbers crunch. The chance of him getting eligible is probably as likely as another spot unexpectedly opening. After taking a few college classes he hopefully meets the clearinghouse requirements and can go on scholarship.

If Malou has success in the classroom, I would assume his NBA credentials could best be developed and evaluated in NCAA competition where he could demonstrate his prowess and benefit from a bare minimum of one full year under Fred’s tutelage! :)
