Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

New links? I'd like to read that.
Frank the Tank did an exhaustive analysis of the ACC's GOR a few years ago, and he had several lawyers looking at it.

They concluded that the ACC's GOR would be exceedingly hard to beat.

I mean, they may luck into a sympathetic state court judge who views the length of the agreement as against public policy for a state university, but a lot would ride on jurisdiction.

I could see the NC supreme court, who are all elected, invalidating the agreement on public policy grounds, but that's a longshot, with a lot to lose if it doesnt work.

It bears repeating that the 4 corner schools add very little to the big 12. if they had value, the PAC could get a good deal now. they dont.

i know the commish wants to expand west, but i still prefer east, where football is taken seriously.

Wait until 2030 and pick up VT, NC state, miami, and Pitt, and call it a day. agreem, ent goes to 2036, but i think 6 years of damages might be something the sec and big would eat for UNC, UVA, fsu, and Clemson.

The four corners give the big 12 options for Big 12 after dark on Fox and ESPN.. That is worth more than adding east cost TV slots and competing against the sec and big 10

Added stability and clearly emerging as the 3rd best conference behind the Big and SEC is worth something.

After all we have seen at ISU, we know 100% what is happening here.

Wake up, NC State and VATech. You are being used. There will be no “Magnificent Seven” going forward. UNC and UVA will happily use you to get an agreement to end the ACC GOR earlier. Only to shiv you and beg for a B1G invite. Same with FSU/Miami/Clemson. They can’t wait to throw you aside so that 2 of them can get an SEC invite.

Don’t be dumb and help them, NC State and VATech. This would not end well for you.

Ways to think you sound smart about realignment:

1) use the word “value” a lot

Somebody’s getting used. There’s five pretty solid takes between the B10 and SEC, VA Tech and NC State aren’t two of them. Maybe they could ride UVA’s and UNC’s coat tails, but it seems that’s far from a guarantee (see Cal, Okie St).

I’ve said this before, but I think NC State is SEC bound. Of the ACC schools, they’d be the only one that would expand the SEC footprint, while having respectable football.

I doubt ethically UNC and UVA feel they could explore blowing up the ACC without also having their opposing state school in the room. Especially if they are governed by the same BOR. Look at how UCLA & Cal worked out.

I look at NCST and VaTech's involvement differently. Maybe they are more pragmatic than their Pac12 brethren. Being in the room helps them have a voice. If they are not invited to Big10 or SEC, they can make it clear to UVA and UNC they expect a side payment like UCLA has to make to Cal.

Also it's not like the ACC deal is a gold mine. The ESPN deal with ACC is $17M (although it might be $5M higher with recent Comcast fees). The Big12 deal is $31.7M. So there is better money in the Big12.

I've said it related to Pac12, but it would also apply to ACC schools. If a school doesn't expect they are Big10 or SEC material, why not make the jump now? Make a Big12/Pac/ACC conference now in the mid 2020's to build value now and leverage results going into the next round of media rights deals in the early 2030's.

The biggest barrier could be finding TV partners that would support inventory for a 20-24 team conference in the mid 2020's at $31.7M per school annually. Especially, if streaming players aren't throwing big cash around.

Academically, UNC to Big10 makes sense.

But if it's mainly about maximizing UNC football and basketball, then recruiting in the SEC footprint has more value than UNC recruiting the Big10 footprint.

The Big10 would love to have UVA, UNC, GaTech, FSU and Miami in Big10 because of the recruiting territory it opens up for all Big10 schools.

I think FSU and Miami have SEC written all over them.

Now now, dont hate on the Arizonas because its a long road trip from Mtown...

It will be west AND east eventually.

Could be. But would Florida want 2 other Florida schools in the SEC?

Personally, I think the Big10 will make a strong run at FSU. They help Big10 schools recruit Florida and culturally not sure Miami is a good fit in the Big10. If Nebraska can fit in Big10 academically, then FSU can.

They’ll probably try, but I see them more SEC than Big10.

Big 10 would favor academics of UNC and Virginia.

I can understand not wanting the PAC schools but then turning around and saying you want NC State and Pitt? Wtf

For those fringe SEC / Big 10 schools (NC State, VA Tech) as well as the ACC leftovers, not a lot of Big 12 love from those guys. Would be great if the SEC / Big 10 takes 4 ACC teams, Big 10 takes Oregon / Washington, we take Arizona (only school wanting to join the Big 12), Big 12 kicks ass next 6 years, and let the rest twist in the wind. 6 years from now, they'll be jostling to get into the Big 12.

Or ESPN can SAVE money on the four corners in the Big12, while adding another time slot, and not pay all 10+(if the PAC expands). Waiting for the ACC is just such a dumb take. SEC and B1G are already at 16. We can get to 16 just like them. They are going to raid the ACC. We will too. Having more schools in your conference makes your conference look more top heavy/successful.
