Real Reason Greg Still Here

all that is going to do is eliminate the other sports. they are not going to cut revenue to football and basketball so they can continue with gymnastics or swimming.

They can't cut either of those due to Title IX restrictions I thought. We'll probably lose something like men's cross country.

ISU athletics is already well on its way to being self-sufficient.

The dumb thing about it is that the department returns any investment by the university many-fold. You could almost consider $$ that are sent to an athletic department marketing funds, as athletics play a huge role in bringing in new potential students to the university, bringing alumni back and keeping alumni connected to the university.

i was just using examples, they would have to cut the minor male and female sports. probably end up losing wrestling to get McD fired next year.

This is the reason Greg is still our coach. It is right there in black and white. No more wondering why -- it is all about dollars.

People need to ante up and increase donations if you want to see a change.

Money is the correct reason why McD is staying. Where is kg-clone? He should be able to confirm this. He says we need to be on board for the long haul. Looks like we are going to suffer a total of 6 years under the McD regime (unless a huge donor steps up). 1 year of no post season under Morgan, 6 years of no post season under McD and then the new coach will reach post season hopefully in year 3. This is a decade of total ineptitude that will destroy our program. The new coach may need more then 3 years because of the hole we are being put in right now.

If we start a McD buyout fund, I have $50 I can send to it right now and I will commit $100/year for the next two years for the buyout. I know it is not much but if a few thousand others start to pony up something similar to this, we are talking about a buyout scenario that can work. We need to do this ASAP...

I posted this on Jon's site but I was wondering what everyone thought here. What happens if ISU doesn't comply with Title IX? Is this and NCAA rule and they'll face sanctions or is this from somewhere else? I've always heard that programs need to comply with it, but I've never heard of any school getting in trouble with it or challenging it at all.

I think this is fair. I'm not sure why tax payers who don't have college degrees, and may not even be a fan of a particular state school should have to support men's CC or softball.

I think what you need to look at with this is when JP took over, had this happened then, we would have been in a world of hurt. JP has consistently, whether by coincidence or not, brought this AD closer and closer each year to being self sufficient and has put us in a position to withstand this. I don't think that point can be overstated with the current situation.

It IS all about the money. Hawkeye fans knew this, and stopped going to games. Not much coming into the arena, and it is time for a new coach. It is bad to say, but if fans keep showing up to Hilton, he will stay. Stop going and that will send a big message.

I think I was reading that state funds make up about 7% of our athletic budget. I may be wrong though.

We are getting to the point where we will soon be self sufficient. UNI on the other hand will take a big hit if they can't get any state help. I would not be surprised if UNI has to go non scolarship in football in the future.

It's tough to compare the two schools because we are talking about two different budgets. Iowa has a lot more money to play around with than we do.

Yep, they could end up with a football program on the level with Drake's.

The only money the AD gets from the school is around $3 million for women's scholarships for compliance with title IX, which was an institutional decision that was made many years ago.

the AD sends money back to the University for an admin fee of about $600K, and for fees for operating various biuldings around campus that the AD uses.

Then we pay full tuition for all atheltes to the school which is $6+ million per year.

I think I read somewhere where Iowa does not get money directly from the University, but they only pay in-state tuition. Not positive, just what someone told me. If they let ISU do that and drop the admin fee, we would come close to break even on the deal.

Do you understand what you are saying here? Never mind the part about you not being a Cyclone fan at all if you actually want to make a conscious effort to not go or support "your" team when you apparently have the means to do so.

In tough economic times you are suggesting that Cyclone fans further cripple their athletic department budget by choosing to not support them monetarily or with their vocal support at games. I wonder how people like you actually think this is a good idea?

Hawkeye fans did not stop going to games in order to make a financial statement that they need to fire the coach. They stopped going because the team stopped giving them something worth watching. Loss of interest started with Alford and his personality, it continued with Lickliter and his boring, losing games.

I don't ever want to see Hilton become a joke like Carver, no matter how bad the team gets. McD will last only as long as the major donors want him around, which by my estimate will be significant improvement next year or you're gone.

If McD got fired this year, you could add in a couple more players leaving, and starting from scratch next year. Maybe it's just delaying the inevitable, but I'd rather see where his new crop of talent takes us, than where we'd be without it.
