Our oven is an electric Frigidaire that was (probably) new with the house, built in 2004 before we moved in.

I replaced the heating element about 3 years ago.

Now, it has this problem: The temperature is wildly inconsistent. We put a thermometer in the over to gauge. You might have it set on 250, and one time, it can't get above 200. Another time, with the same setting, it might be 400.

It can over-shoot or under-shoot badly. (Mostly undershooting, but not entirely). So things are either taking forever to cook, or getting over-cooked.

My main question is this: I hate to pay a repair man $200 to come out and say "time to replace the oven." On the other hand, I don't want to drop $1,000 on a new oven if it's just a $50 part. I have no appliance experience.

Suggestions?

Thermostats/temps sensors are usually pretty easy to replace and it’s the likely culprit. Google your range and see if you can find a vid on YouTube.

I’d replace the temp sensor and go from there.

Agree that it’s probably your temp sensor. I also have a Frigidaire oven (new with the house in 2013). After about 5 years it keep throwing error code’s every time we’d run the oven. I got a new temp sensor from Westside Appliance in Urbandale and installed it myself. Relatively cheap part and easy to install and (knock on wood) we haven’t had any issues since.

Does the oven need cleaning? First thing I’d check is google model number and temp sensor location and see if it’s covered with grease or something??? No judgement on how clean your oven is…
