My memory may be a little off but if it serves me correctly, every 10-15 years, one of these places gets a grease fire which also happens to correspond to when they need remodeling. @SCyclone - Is my memory off?

Also, J-Mar and Tom Thumb are really good fast/quick food places.

Your memory is spot on. There's a running joke in town about that - it even happened at the Sports Page restaurant up in Spencer!

Comcast cable has a bunch of music channels and just started listening to their smooth jazz channel lately as my home background music. They play some good stuff and throw up little tidbits on the screen about the artists. Used to listen to this stuff more years ago, some Dave Grusin, Bob James etc. Talking LP spinning days.

I've loved Spyro Gyra for years - even saw them live at the Guthrie Theater some years ago - but lately I've really taken a shine to Gregg Karukas. Also like Boney James and Tom Scott. Scott plays with Bob James quite often, one of my favorite charts by those two is Spindrift.

Wichita has to be the restaurateur capital of the Midwest. Pizza Hut and Freddys were also started there. I am glad it clarified that it was started again down there in 2014 because I don't remember any when we were down there.

They also added a Casey's not too far from where our house was since we left.

Don't forget White Castle - they began in Wichita, too.

I will never forget going out to sleep with my older brother in this ancient, tiny canvas tent one night. We wanted to rough it so we pitched the tent on the spot on our property that was as far as possible from the house. I woke up in the middle of the night to a big breeze and rain. In about 10 minutes I saw a guy building an ark and there were lightning strikes everywhere. My brother told me to wait for one to hit close to us and then sprint for the house. One hit a tree about 50 feet from us and I shot out of that tent like I was shot out of a cannon.

I lived.

I generally slept in a camper when camping as a kid. We had a soft side pop up but it was pretty cozy with 7 of us in it.
Our property growing up was about 1.75 acres of which about 1/2 was all trees. Up the hill was a small clearing and my dad would pitch this ancient canvas tent and we would build a little fire and all us kids would sleep in the tent.

Has anyone ever rented a car for a road trip? My aunt and uncle are coming up this weekend from Wichita and they ALWAYS rent a car when going farther than Kansas City or Oklahoma City because they (read he) doesn't want that wear and tear on the vehicle. Assuming the fuel cost is a wash are you really putting $100+ worth of wear and tear on your vehicle. My opinion is no...

The economics of it make no sense. The save wear and tear also makes no sense because steady highway miles are the easiest on your car. Plus, IMHO, driving something you are familiar with is a plus for safety. You're not distracted by trying to figure out the heater, radio, cruise control etc.

Renting a car for a road trip might make sense if you are driving to California or something and the car you own is a piece of unreliable crap or if you need something bigger to haul a group or something.

I guess a lot of it is the cost. I rented a car for the Liberty Bowl. I think the rental was $170 plus the gas. I thought that was acceptable as opposed to driving my car

@wxman1 Tell your uncle he should rent a hotel room to save wear and tear on your guest room and hot water heater.

This is the same uncle that got mad at me once for leaning the plane while on the ground when common knowledge/practice is to do so at minimum for a short period of time if not the whole time to clear the plugs and prevent them from getting fouled.

Pre-kids, my wife, myself and another couple rented a minivan to take to Denver. We were all pretty poor at the time and every one of us had small ****** cars that got bad gas mileage. We knew we were going to take it up into the mountains and none of us felt very good taking our cars, so we pooled money together and invested in a Chrysler Town and Country.

We removed the middle row of seats set up some coolers with beverages, put a Playstation (the original one) and a TV on one of the coolers and road tripped to see the Metallica/Deftones concert at Mile High. If anyone got tired, they threw a sleeping bag down an slept in moderate comfort.

I'm sure we spent a little more than if we'd have taken one of our own vehicles, but the improved gas mileage, space, comfort and reliability was well worth it. We also took that minivan to some off-the-beaten-path rafting place. We rafted the Royal Gorge during that trip and got to experience some nice class IV rapids. That trip was one I'll never forget.

Bonus: we may be the only people without children that ever rented a minivan to go to a Metallica concert.

Probably insists on changing his car oil every 1500 miles because that's what HIS dad did.
