I played on my friend's SNES in high school and was pretty addicted. In college, a couple guys on my floor had one and we'd play for a little bit, but nobody ever really got into it. A lot of guys were playing games on their computers, but not very many had gaming systems.

The original playstation coming out in my junior year, but I was dirt poor and was saving money for food and beer (not necessarily in that order). I'm sorta glad I was out of college when video games really started to get detailed. On-line gaming would've been murder on my GPA.
