I'm not sure how he maintained that. He grew up in Colombia, and studied in Europe before getting his PHD in the US ( I think at Columbia University). Maybe that helped him somehow? Also, I'm not saying he wasn't cynical about some things. Maybe he employed a professorial poker face.
