LONG HOMEOWNER RANT:

Cranked open some windows in the back room that I never open so I could get some music outside while I finally plant the shrubs I bought forever ago. As I crank open the window I see the bottom of the sash is nasty *** black mildew moldy. After much cleaning I find I can just pick rotted wood off the bottom of the sash. 13-year old Marvin pro-line windows. WTF. The identical window ganged with this one is just fine.

I have dozens of these so go check all of the ones I never operate. Open the one in the front room and it is really rotten on the bottom, so rotten that the operating gear pulls out when I then try to crank it shut.

So, I drive to Scherer Brothers where I bought the window. They tell me I am ****ed because it’s a 10-year warranty. I ask if Marvin techs can come out to measure and stuff so I can order replacement windows. Nope, they will only come out for warranty issues, you have to measure everything and then we can order stuff. The dicks at least showed me where and what to measure in the showroom display.

So, **** Marvin Windows and **** the half-*** **** service from Scherer Brothers. They used to be a real pro lumber yard but today they are just order takers.

Am looking to call some sash window repair dudes. Everything but the bottom is sound. These kinda guys usually work vintage double-hungs but I gotta think they could repair this to.

Oh, BTW, **** you Marvin Windows!

Ranting Boxster is almost as entertaining as ranting CG. Less personal attacks on people, but fun nonetheless.

OK, even though no one probably cares, this VW thing is nutso, and I think even non car-people will have some interest it's so brazen.

Short version: VW cheated the diesel emissions testing by figuring out a way to make the emissions control only turn on DURING THE TESTING FOR EMISSIONS. Outside of that, the emissions control system is severely limited, making the NOx emissions 10 to 40 times higher than the limit in every instance other than when it was being tested by the EPA. So it passed the test, but every single vehicle is running around violating the limit 100% of the time it's running. They're screwed.

Long version: Modern diesels (pretty much all of them other than VW's car diesels, anyway) meet the emissions standard by using a fluid (Diesel Emission Fluid, or DEF...it's Urea and water...essentially, cleaned up urine) sprayed into the exhaust to catalyze Nitrous Oxide (NOx) into Nitrogen and Oxygen, since NOx is a huge polluter in diesel emissions. This fluid has to be refilled (not sure how often). Since VW mainly sells passenger cars in the US, ain't nobody wanna mess with that, so VW was motivated to pass emissions testing without DEF. You can do it, but your power or mileage will suffer. Again, VW trying to create demand for diesel cars in the US was motivated to overcome it. We thought they had, but no one knew how...until now. The emissions testing is pretty specified to make it 'fair' and predictable for car companies to design for. Problem is, VW programmed their Engine Control Unit (ECU) with an algorithm to monitor the specific conditions in the test...one of them probably involves the front wheels turning, but the back not...conditions on a Dynamometer during the testing, which would never exist in the real world, other than tuners who might independently dyno their cars to see how much power they can get out of them. Students at West Virginia were testing the cars and found the anomaly, but didn't know why. The EPA started asking questions, and VW fessed up.

1st thought - those WVU students just all got themselves jobs somewhere

2nd thought - that was a lot of work to cheat

3rd thought - VW gon get fined.

Actually, I was wrong on that...I saw something earlier about WVU, mis read it.

A relatively small clean-air NGO, the International Council on Clean Transportation, noticed discrepancies between tests of diesel Volkswagens in Europe, so last year they borrowed equipment from West Virginia University to test the cars’ actual emissions in real-world driving in the U.S.

Sorry...was really, really wrong.

WRT the second thought...they were motivated by profit. They gambled that their little ruse would never be noticed, and their small diesels would be cheaper and less hassle without the DEF system, and still have the same power and efficiency. They NEEDED those things to try and gain a foothold with diesel cars in the US. We just don't buy them. I would consider a small truck (like a tacoma or Colorado) with diesel, but only because I'd want to keep it for a long time.

3rd thought: Could be in the multi-billions of dollars.

sounds like they done ****ed up in getting any business from you.

I have 36 Marvin Windows. Generally the ones under my overhangs are good since not as much water gets on them. Will price out a new sash from those ***-holes in Warroad, Minnesota but the one is 2nd story and 57" x 34" = heavy. Not something you just pull up a ladder with you. Going to be scaffold time for sure.
Oh, and **** Marvin Windows. Just **** them! **** them today and for ****in ever! :realmad:

Googled it up and found lots of ****** off customers with the exact same issue.

He says to never go full Boxster. Did he just go full Boxster?
