What is average life expectancy of a laptop?
Depends what it's got in it, really. Devices with SSDs and decent build quality last a lot longer these days than they used to. Improvements to actual math-doing components are diminishing versus year over year changes, say, 15 years ago.

I just got notice that my work laptop is reaching the end of it's life and will be replaced. This company acquired us in 2018 so It's about 4 years old.
I bought my current laptop about 2 years ago and will use it until it dies, Of course it doesn't get that much use as I am always on my work laptop

I think this one is about 4-5 years old. I bought it when I started to do appraisals. I probably sacrificed a little on the internals since I wanted a larger screen for the laptop. When you sometimes have 4-5 different real estate listings pulled up, you want as much screen as possible. The one my wife uses is probably 12 years old or older but just doesn't seem to have much for issues. Mine seems to slow down and take way longer to start up than it should. I've tried deleting some things but what I want off that I think could be an issue won't let me. Probably need to take it into someone better than I for that, but figure with electronics, it's usually easier to just buy a new one.

Slowdown with programs and loading things is heavily correlated to not having an SSD. You could buy and put one in yourself, but if you're going thru that much work, you might as well just get a newer device.

Another good tip with older devices is open up the back panel and blow it out/clean it. Canned air, air compressor, whatever you have to get that **** out. Dust causes thermal problems, thermals cause massive slowdowns.

Was windows recently updated?
How much memory does it have?

I haven't went to 11 yet, maybe that is it. I'm still on 10. Has 8G of Ram so that is probably one of my problems there.

It seems fine once it gets up and going for the most part. It just take 15 minutes by the time a virus check hits and everything else. This morning was pushing well more than that, I C/A/D 'd it twice and was able to get it to a spot where I could restart it and get a lot of the issues cleaned up.

That sounds like my old desktop. Takes several minutes or more to boot up. Not sure what the corruption is, conflicting software/apps or virus/spyware. Been thinking of reloading Windows. It's still on 10. Runs fine after several minutes but something ain't right and sometimes the restart is even slower.

Bought my cheap Acer Aspire 5 with SSD three years ago as a stop gap replacement before I went to Mexico and it's still doing great. Although it likes to freeze up occasionally. Frustrating but a reboot takes all of 40 secs and back to a restored page so it's not that annoying for a confuser I mostly use for surfin.

After three straight days of snow removal "exercise" I guess I am out of excuses for going to workout. Will roll Das Audi out for first time in days.

I finally unburied myself from all of the clutter on my desk that accumulated during partial shutdown at Iowa State. Now I don't know what to do with the rest of my day lol. We are preeeeetty slow today.

Daughter just informed me that this is the most snow in the Twin Cities by this date in over 30 years. Not since January 1992 has there been this much this early in the year. I thought it felt like a lot, I guess it is...

Since that is several years before I moved north, I guess I have never experienced a Minnesota early winter like this.

Average TC winter snowfall (full winter season): 51.2"
Snowfall so far this winter: 48.2"
Average by this date: 20.4"
Fifteen inches so far this January makes it the snowiest January in 5 years even though January has barely started.

At least it is sunny with no hint of precipitation today. The freezing fog this morning was fun though...

That would have been due in a large part to the 1991 Halloween storm that dumped an insane amount of snow that was with us until spring 1992. 20" of snow for Halloween!

Yes, thanks. I didn't make that connection that the 91 Halloween storm was part of that winter.

For those not familiar, that Halloween storm was part of the same storm system that ended up the "Perfect Storm" the book and movie were about. I believe that while Minnesota was getting the Halloween snow storm those of us in Central Iowa were getting that incredible ice storm. I remember sitting at home and hearing a "CRACK!" every few minutes as another ice covered tree limb broke off and came down.
