RAGBRAI 2018

Riding the entire thing for the first time. I'm scared.

Drink beer, have fun, take your time. It tends to be a series of 12-18 mile rides every day. You don't need to start at the break of dawn, but for the first year it would be smart to get a day or two in without the huge crowds.

Anyone in Jefferson interested in hosting a bike club of 25? Thought we had everything figured out, but for some reason we didn't get a host for Jefferson. We are an older group, so not too wild.

Can't do it this year but its on the bucket list. Do most people register or just ride? And how frowned upon is going rouge?

If I get down for a day or two I'll buy a day pass. They sell them each day. Lots goes into this so supporting it by buying a bracelet seems the right thing to do rather than bandit riding (unless you are just popping in for a part day or something).

I like everyone in my group to register simply because there is a cost to putting this circus on. We always have one or two that don't remember to register or suddenly decide they can go after the registration is complete. Registered riders do get some small discounts on food and showers, but it only amounts to $15-20 for the week.

Riding the whole week have a team of about 30. It's my favorite week of the year. I can't wait this is going to the longest week ever. We will see everyone at the first bar on the left.

This can also be accomplished by starting a little later in the day. If we start much before 0900 any day we are disappointed because the roads are too crowded for our liking.

Of course it is tough to start too early anyway when we have been up half the night supporting the local economy.

Can't wait! Will be my first year attempting any part of it, and I hope I'll finish. I've not trained exceptionally well, but feel somewhat confident.

We are usually on the road by 7:30 or so, but that is usually the most crowded time in my opinion. Even leaving at 6:30 would get a less experienced RAGBRAIer a chance to work their way into it. I personally don't like to be out there at 4 PM if I can help it. Just can't take the heat like I used to 30 years ago. Definitely not comfortable with riding in after darks like some. Everyone has their own strategy, but in the end it is just a lot of people on bikes. I do agree that if you wait a couple hours the roads are a lot better.

Leaving between 7-8a is madness that I'd recommend avoiding at all cost.

I'm riding Sunday to Friday, mostly so I can party in Ames and Iowa City. I'll be in an Iowa State, Supersonics, or Hoiberg Bulls jersey (that I bought in 2013 tyvm). Say hi and grab a Busch Delight with me!

You'll be good each day is a series of 10-15 mile rides. Are you with a group that moves your stuff for you?

Yup. My girlfriends parents talked me into doing it with them. They've been doing it for many years. I'm sure it will be fine.
