Question internet in central Iowa

I live in Ankeny and switched to MC about a year ago after having CL for many years. MC is definitely faster - I have the 500 mbs speed and Speedtest.net tells me that I’m running at 440 MB’s on 5G and 90 MB’s in 1G. 1G seems to be more reliable and have better range. I still rent the MC router but will purchase a new system based on this thread. An issue we have is I need to restart the router about 1-2 times a week when I briefly lose service. Restarting almost always takes care of the issue.
I will be looking at Google or Netgear mesh systems. Any advice on which one to get? I really don’t need the Google Assistant with their mesh since we already have Alexa.

Ubiquiti is by far better than netgear. Way way better.

Longtime Century Link guy but am frustrated as hell about the lack of speed options where I live. I currently have 20. They can get me upgraded to 30 but is ridiculous in 2020.

I have heard nothing but horror stories about Mediacom internet. I work from home so reliability is critical. Do you guys recommend it? Any luck, good or bad?
parents have century link, a few neighbors have mediacom. the mediacom van is parked across the street it seems at least once a month working on the junction box, maybe see the century link van on the street once or twice a year.

have mediacom in waukee area

no issues ever with it.

may be a bit laggy at the peak times at night but still functional.
I got Google Nest to help with that. Been perfect ever since. I stream, the kids watch YouTube and play video games and I have 0 issues. I also have Mediacom.

I live in Ankeny and had to switch from CenturyLink to Mediacom due to my wife WFH. It has been great once connected properly.

I live in Clive and haven’t had CL extended outages for years.
The speed is getting too slow though. Went to Century Links website and they were having technically difficulties ironically.

I may look into switching more but I have PTSD from having Mediacom in Ames during college.

Ha ha. I was actually going to say the same thing. We had Mediacom, which was provided by our landlord, and collagen it was crap. HOWEVER, I always wondered if it was the routers that those buildings had

@ChrisMWilliams - I have this:

Google WiFisystem, 3-Pack - Router replacement for whole home coverage (NLS-1304-25)

I absolutely love it. Have one on every level of my house. My wife, 3 kids and I steam a tone of stuff without any issues.

I have Mediacom 60Mbps which has 400GB max data. It is quite reliable and streams about every thing well except for live ESPN+ on the laptop. I purchased my own router and modem. They save me money compared to renting from Mediacom. The only time I had a problem with the data cap was when a guest was living here and doing some heavy duty gaming.

i personally dont have issues at night on my devices (computer, xbox, phone) but 2 of those things are directly wired into router.

my wife always complains that her laptop isnt loading. i blame her.

Both my wife and I work from home periodically, but between the two of us (and counting working on weekends sometimes), we rely on the internet almost daily for work.

We have Mediacom here in Des Moines. I honestly can't recall the last time we've had any issues in speed or connectivity.

I know it is hard to ever love any cable company, but the hard reality is for internet, I think most have realized this is our best option in central Iowa. Good luck!

So from what I've learned in this thread, stick with Mediacom.
Also, buy my own modem/router, possibly Google Nest.

Does anyone know if there are any modem/routers that would not be compatible with Mediacom? I assume just return their equipment once I install mine, and make sure they don't charge me rental fees?

Always always always get your own router

Why? (Honest question from an uninformed internet user)

Also, we moved and mediacom doesn't service the apartments we live in. Had to go to Century Link and they've been making miss Mediacom ever since. Horrible customer service and reliability. Had a period of 2 weeks without internet.

Get your own modem. Providers have been caught throttling down speeds to get people to upgrade.

I always do a speed test every so often to ensure I get what I am paying for. If speeds aren't there I just call support and ask what is going with my speed and they get it back.

Any certain app you use for speed test? What is their reason behind slow speed when you call?

Because there's are old and over used. Many of the problems people have with ISP is their equipment not the physical connection.

I always use the speedtest.xfinity.com. First time they came in and changed the connectors on the actual cables that made a huge difference!!

Really haven't had any problems lately, but when things get slow and it is pretty evident, I will reboot the modem and it clears it up right way.
