Longtime Century Link guy but am frustrated as hell about the lack of speed options where I live. I currently have 20. They can get me upgraded to 30 but is ridiculous in 2020.

I have heard nothing but horror stories about Mediacom internet. I work from home so reliability is critical. Do you guys recommend it? Any luck, good or bad?

No problems over the last few years with Mediacom. They have done a nice job improving reliability. The bigger issue is cost and whether you want to pay their prices.
I do and am happy at this point.

have mediacom in waukee area

no issues ever with it.

may be a bit laggy at the peak times at night but still functional.

I had Mediacom for 12+ years at my old house. Second on the get your own modem and save $ and get better speeds. I had scant issues with it. I was grandfathered into their highest speed, so I can't speak on pricing.

The biggest downside is they frequently call you with sales pitches for their TV and phone services.

Disclaimer: I currently have CenturyLink 1 gig because it was the only thing available at my new house.

Another for Mediacom in Ankeny. Was hesitant due to hearing horror stories, but issues have been few and far between, and nothing beyond a temporary slowdown every once in a while. Have their 100 mbps option with 1000 GB cap, and it has worked well even streaming all football season.

I live in Ankeny and centurylink has been slow as hell and spotty for me as well (as recently as yesterday when we were trying to stream slingtv). I don’t believe there was anything else offered in our neighborhood at the time we moved in but am seriously considering looking elsewhere as well so am interested in thoughts here also.

I’ll add on to my post and second the own modem. I think that seems to make a difference with Mediacom. You can find them at Best Buy.

Customer service between the two is the same, awful. Go with the company that can get you the best speeds.

You could always try mediacom (hagle for no contract) for a bit while still having centurylink (just unplug the router) then cancel the one you don't want.

One thing to make sure of is data caps. Have century link tell you how much data you have been using each month. CL doesn't have data caps, while mediacom does. Make sure you get a package that has enough data.

I had CL for years but had to switch to Mediacom because I needed faster speed for streaming. Medicaom gas been great and issues have been minimal. Why CL refuses to lay fiber in established neighborhoods blows my mind.

They're only bad if you have an issue. Then it's "restart the router" multiple times until someone actually comes out. You may have to explain the needed repairs to the service tech, but they're responsive and quick once they arrive.

One bad experience with Mediacom, they were working on the lines and forgot to hook us back up so we were without Internet for a week because it was just before Thanksgiving.

Reliability is great, they used to shut down for maintenance some time between 12-6am but now they just let you know it will be slower speeds. We haven't had outages that I can remember in the past few years, just have to make sure to reset your modem and router once in a while.

We have the 100Mbps at $80 a month, we stream everything since we don't have cable so we go way over the 60Mbps which has 400GB max data. 100Mbps has 1000GB data and we never go over that.

I had mediacom for 5 years with no problem. Then I started having outages and in a year period has 12 visits by 12 different techs. On the 11th time I shamed them on Twitter and they actually sent out a real mediacom employee who actually fixed the issue. In this time we replaces the modem twice, wall outlets multiple times, dug a trench in my yard, etc. and the problem ended up being in the neighborhood box and should have been fixed on the first visit. That was 3 years ago and haven't had any problems since.

Only rarely have issues with Mediacom internet in Ames, maybe once or twice last year.

I run a software company, so internet connection is crucial for operations.

We use MediaCom and rarely have issues.

Central Iowa has some of the best internet reliability in the country. That is why facebook and other super-mega-corps have server hubs here. If anyone is struggling with their internet, I would suggest trying a different internet provider.

Startford Communications. I wish I could get them in Ames, great service, speeds, and the price was awesome. Other than that its Mediacom, only a few issues here and there.
