Quarterback Analysis

I miswrote or people misunderstood (haven't gone back to check) but I wasn't intending to imply Dekkers has great pocket poise. To be honest, I don't think we know at this point. He made a lot of rushed plays, but a lot of that was because the defenders were in the backfield very quickly. Without receivers other than X being able to break free from a paper bag, he also didn't look good when he did have time on obvious passing downs. I don't blame it all on him at this point.

Our OL and WR (absent X) crews gave zero help to Dekkers and most QBs would have hate the same fate.

I’m of the mind that Rocco and Hughes give us more this year than Dekkers would - mentally and mobility wise. And then JJ is the future.

Dekkers has all the physical tools, I just don’t think he has the mental side to put it all together. I’ve heard similar for a year from inside the program.

That’s the problem coming from such a small school with very little competition

Everyone here is super quick to get rid of Dekkers which I don’t necessarily agree with. The OL and WR play was abysmal. Any QB was not going to succeed with the way those position groups played. There are absolutely things Dekkers needs to improve, but I don’t see Rocco/Kohl unseating him immediately after he returns

It sure seems like the main concern with Dekkers is betweem the ears. Obviously poor decision making for a team leader with the gambling issue as well as talk of not being a good team guy and not the best football IQ. The way CMC likes to play relies on not turning the ball over and that was a major weakness for Dekkers last season to the tune of 14 interceptions. Can't have that. Assuming the suspension is probably 2 - 3 games, if Rocco starts and is playing well, moving the ball and not turning it over it would be hard to just give Dekkers his job back. Would be an interesting scenario for sure.

I think this is a HUGE factor... our WRs never get separation. Almost every attempted pass... our WR's have defenders draped all over them. Our WR coaching has either been terrible over the years, or the WR's ability has just not been that good? I think it's a combination of things... probably poor plays being drawn up too.
Agreed. Hopefully with the offseason changes, that gets fixed!

I'm not trying to imply that. I think he's got a lot of talent and a higher ceiling than we've seen. I've heard enough to question if he'll get the mental aspects quickly enough though. Absolutely the OL, WR, and TE groups made him look far worse than he played and improvement in those areas would absolutely translate to him looking like an above average QB. He's the most "ready" QB we have if he gets help and makes the right mental growth.

If he’s not having any fall camp that’s not good
