I'd bet that's not uncommon at the college level these days (actually has been like this for several years now).
So many teams hurrying up to the ball to get a look from the defense, let the coaches see how they lined up as the offensive players look over to the sidelines, then receive a call modification if needed to run the optimal play for the situation.
Put the majority of the big decisions and reads into coaches that study a ton of film, have lots of experience, and eyes with a better view in the press box rather than an 18-22 year old on the field.
