This seems an odd post to me. So you are saying that his proven track record of recruiting and developing NBA caliber talent is a red flag? Irrespective of your conference, NBA talent is NBA talent. The point is being able to identify great players, recruit them successfully, keep them at your school, and develop them by putting them in the best positions for success. The fact that he's done that AND sent some to the NBA is a good sign.
You are correct that recruiting and developing NBA talent is a positive. One conclusion is Prohm will bring even more NBA talent to a P5 conference school. If that is the outcome the Cyclones will do well. An alternate conclusion is, playing for a perennial conference winner, Murray State, that captured their 24th Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship is a draw for NBA talent. If everyone’s first choice is to play in a P5 conference NDSU and UNI wouldn’t get enough talent to compete with BCS schools. Some people would rather be the big fish in a small pond. That begs the question, should Prohm’s record be better in the Ohio Valley Conference with NBA talent?

Of the leaked candidates Prohm is my preference. His style sounded most like Johnny and Hoiball. He graduates his players and has a known coaching style and demeanor. The only thing that looks close to cautionary is did he perform up to the level of talent on his teams.

Murray State Director of Athletics Allen Ward's statement on Steve Prohm taking the head men's basketball coaching position at Iowa State.

"I want to thank Coach Prohm for a tremendous four years and wish him the best at Iowa State," Ward said. "I have no doubt he'll be successful with the Cyclones. He's a class individual and represented Murray State proudly. I will always be grateful for his service. Because of the unusual timing of this move, it's in our best interest to move very quickly to find a replacement. I'll be visiting with Murray State President Dr. Davies this afternoon to determine our course of action. Murray State has been fortunate to have success for many years under the leadership of some of the most talented coaches in all of college basketball, this time around will be no different. It is our goal to find an individual that embodies what Murray State is all about and will embrace the expectations we have for this program. The future is bright for Racer Basketball."

For mid major jobs, the Murray State job is pretty attractive. I bet they aren't worried about being a stepping stone...

better than 16-0?

The unfortunate reality is that he doesn't stand much of a chance. If the team succeeds next year, it's because of Fred. If it fails next year, it's because of (Phil Jackson, Coach K, Tom Izzo, Greg Popovich, Calipari, Pitino...). After that he's got a total rebuild in front of him and either extremely high expectations for continued success or an otherwise large negative outlook bearing over him. If he's able to pull through the next couple of years, ISU may have something, otherwise there is going to be some considerably angry donors that are being pushed into upping their donations for the seats they have had for decades.

Replace Prohm with any of the bolded names above, and the "facts" in that paragraph don't change. Only your assumptions change. So essentially you're unhappy with any new coach?

Every single one of the candidates had some flavor of "unknown" in their bio. I like the hire, but then I would have been fine with TJ as well. I did like them both head-and-shoulders above the rest on the known list.

Steve Prohm hire is an excellent one for Iowa State. Likable, down-to-earth guy. You might even call him Hoibergian.

Think you spelled it wrong. Unless it's Hoiberg-again I'm ambivalent...

Mostly joking. I support and welcome the new coach. And even though he's never been to Ames he will think it's heaven compared to Tishomingo, OK.

Murph pumping sunshine on TJ right now and saying Prohm is an unknown

That's a pretty gross mischaracterization of what he said. Although, he did come up with this gem: "When you hire a mid-major coach, you don't know if you are getting a McCaffery or a McDermott.". Puke!

There's really not much difference from an ISU standpoint.

I hope this hire works out for JP because he hitched his wagon to Prohm. If it doesn't work, Pollard should follow him out. And I say this as a huge JP fan. Huge risk to go with a low-major coach. All rumored candidates had risk to them so this isnt about Prohm. But there was a lot on this hire. If rumors are true that we could go $3-4M on a coach, this feels like settling. Underwhelming, for sure.

How can you blame JP when Jeremy says if it had been left up to him, TJ would've been hired?

better than 16-0?
16-0 is a record for one of four years. Also there is only one trip to the big dance in his first year. Four years is a small data set that can be skewed by one player in small-major conference. If his teams had the same average over 8-10 years that they have had in 4, I would be all in. Next year we should learn if his Xs and Os are solid. In three years we will know if he can build/maintain a program.

When the clones go to the big dance next year will it be a Prohmenade?
