No one in the new Big 12 will play each other so it’s not saying much when it’s on the back of a conference like the AAC. BYU has a pretty respectable schedule tho

It's better for the brand of the program to be ranked in the top 25. The AP poll is meaningless but the more we have a ranking next to our name the better.
That little number next to the school name everywhere it appears - schedules, scores, commercials, stories - helps perception. "Meh, Iowa State, so what? But #25 Iowa State? Tell me more."

There are three new Big XII preview games - Baylor plays BYU and both Kansas and Tech play Houston. If you're feeling optimistic, TCU plays Colorado, and Okie Lite has Arizona St.

Has any team ever won a national title that didn't receive a single vote in the AP preseason poll? Or will we be the first team to ever do it this year?
Since the year 2000, Auburn at 22nd in 2010 is the lowest a team that eventually won the national championship was preseason ranked. They are also the only team outside of the top 20, with Oklahoma at 19th in 2000. Most teams in the top 10, and since the CFP every team that eventually won the title was preseason ranked 6th or better.

Obviously Clemson's bowl victory last year over a tough opponent vaulted them back into playoff contention.

Someone still votes for Nebraska.
Nothing about Nebraska's recent past would make you think that they deserve to be in the top 25 but they did bring in a boatload of good transfers so if this "win now" experiment works I could see them sneaking in there.
