Players still figuring out roles

From what I could tell tonight we're having some growing pains with either new players figuring out where they fit into the team or guys having expanded roles from last year. It will get better as time goes on, but there are only two players from last year I would say have the same role from last year.

Hogue is still in there as a rebounder and cleanup man who benefits from good passing to score easy buckets down low and Edozie is still just there to be a rebounder and post defender (he played very well tonight going beyond that role).

Everyone else is having a few growing pains. BDJ is struggling with not having to score all of his team's points and playing within a team system. He also seems to have issues driving and dishing for wide open 3's. Morris, Thomas and Naz are all trying to add a slashing element to their game to account for the loss of Kane and are at times still hesitant to power in and finish hard at the hoop. Naz seems to have picked up slashing the best of the 3. Nader looks lost at times, it'd be nice if he could settle into the role that Dustin had last year, albeit with less production probably. Niang at times is trying to do too much and you can tell he really is trying to put the team on his back. If he is going to play the 5 he needs to challenge drivers, at least until McKay is eligible.

Thing to remember though, we had growing pains in the early season pretty much every year since we've become Transfer U, last year was the exception not the rule. Once these guys get used to playing with each other and carve out their roles we'll have a fun ride.

It's basically Game 2, we haven't even figured out how to get from the locker room to the tunnel to the floor yet let alone roles on the team.

They stopped the Georges interior offense. We looked around and they were guarding the perimeter well. Then we looked at Hogue and he was negated. Three more weeks to McKay. Pretty much all our depth was stuffed. This is what I could it would be like playing Duke or Kentucky. Need the McKay soon. Nader was stopped in his tracks. Monte was off shooting both games. Need the McKay asap. Noticed Custer and the Greek were not to blame.

This just shows you have to hit outside shots against quick taller teams.

Yeah and wally burnham even thought our defense was bad. This is like the Royce team. Everyone has to figure out there role on the team. Then we will kill it.

Eveyone's role is clear. Play defense and shoot if you are open. Simple game.

I'm not super concerned.

You know Fred analyazed the tape multiple times already and will use it to teach, evaluate strengths/areas of growth for individuals/team and be able to help the guys figure out how to play as a team.

It's been a fairly regular thing with Fred to spend the non-conference season experimenting with lineups and different combinations to see what works and what doesn't in any given situation. Last year was the outlier with the undefeated streak, but that still involved a few close games where the guys just willed their way to a win. I think the ultimate goal is to have the team ready for Big 12 play. Every year under Fred, the team has been ready for that and looked remarkably improved when the "real" games started.

This group of players hasn't gelled as a team yet. Might be 1 too many guards in the rotation thats really the only issue I see. All are good players and need shots. McKay/Hogue/Niang will be a very good front court.

What is my purpose?

I think its going to take more time and maybe a loss or two for Hoiberg and the team to adjust to the rotation of players unlike last year where it was pretty much 7 players.

Agree, and it wouldn't surprise me if this team has at least half a dozen losses before it really gets going, which might not be until at least mid-late January. Mel was a horse on the boards and this team may have trouble rebounding and scoring inside against big teams until McKay gets playing and adjusted. Nader and McKay haven't played in real games in a year and a half, and it will take them time to not only get comfortable playing games again, but adjusting to the higher level of competition and their new teammates. I won't be surprised at all if it takes this group longer to come together than some of Fred's other teams, but I believe it will eventually happen when we get well into the conference season.

I think this is the best part of this post. Our greatest problem was offensive in that game. (Offensive, and offensive.) That was we weren't drawing the defense into the middle and dishing out to our three shooters. We weren't getting many open threes that weren't extremely deep. Therefore, our shooting percentage went down the tubes in the second half. We will get it, these are better passers. I am sure part of the problem was the refs were letting our players get mugged when they went in the middle and didn't seem to allow our players to give the same treatment to Maryland. Still, better passing would have enhanced our shooting percentage.

We look like Michigan did last season when they were trying to figure out how to play without Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway. Once we learn how to play without Ejim and Kane we will be fine.
