Player Profile: Sam Richardson (QB)

After watching the highlight film again, I think SR is not only elusive in the backfield but can hurt you with his feet in the open field too. That highlight film just goes on and on. What a high school career this young man had and I'm sooo glad he's a Clone.

I agree. He may not have break away speed but that kids going to pick up a first down when the play breaks down. If he's as accurate a thrower as it looks thats more than enough from a speed standpoint. That last video is pretty darn impressive.

Does anyone think Sam can come in and play right away. I realize that we have some experience coming back in Jerome and Jantz at the Juco level and JB and JC have been in the system. But the more I think about this, I really think Sam has a chance. He is the best QB we've had come to Ames in awhile and I think the only question is how well he understands the offense. I really think he will get a long look come fall camp. Is anyone else with me? Or am I just too excited about this kid?

No. He won't know the playbook by then so it will be hard for him to impress anyone to the point they feel he can give us a better shot to win than anyone else.

Ideal situation is one of our qb's excels and grabs the position so SR can redshirt. If the coaches aren't happy with what we have I absolutely believe SR will be given the opportunity to be the man this fall by CPR.

There is no way Richardson would be ready to start this year. Thats basically just throwing in the towel before the season starts. People are freaking out because Jantz hasn't beat out Tiller yet, and he isn't coming straight from HS either.

If you think Sam Richardson has any chance to start this season, you know next to nothing about football. There is NO WAY. I don't care how talented he is, there is no way a true frosh can come in and beat out 4 other guys for the spot. If we didn't have any young guys and there were only two guys in front of him the odds would still be astronomically low. Let alone two veterans AND two young guys with experience in the system ahead of him.

I honestly think Rich is the best of the 5, but I don't think he can mentally be ready now. He needs to learn the system a little before being thrown out to the wolves.

Agreed on that. I'm not saying he won't be a good QB or even a good QB early in his career at ISU. It is just unfair to expect him to play in the Big 12 as a true freshman with all of those guys in front of him.

I think that he'll get an honest look. Chances are he won't be ready mentally to run the offense, but the position is going to be wide open when practice starts this fall, no doubt about that. TRFR have started before on winning teams in CFB. But they usually have a dominant supporting cast. Without that, they are asked to do too much and risk getting beat up and losing their confidence.

I think he will step into a very good situation when Jantz is gone. I may be getting way ahead of myself, but I just have a gut feeling Jantz wins it this year and Richardson takes over after SJ is done here.

TRFR.. I understand what it means but is it too hard to right out True Freshman haha.. I dont expect to be sober this week and all the initialing is getting out of hand.

I'd like to see Sam RS this season and take the starting spot next year. IMO, it's totally possible if he can gain some more strength by spring ball 2012. Looking at film, he's the best QB we have based on mecanics, accuracy and ability to read defenses. Granted, we're talking about high school video, but that has to translate to the next level in most cases. It sounds like I'm prepping this kid to be the greatest thing to ever grace ISU, but he is a very sound QB from all accounts.

I respectfully disagree but that is what these forums are for..... discussion. I just wouldn't be surprised if they were to eventually move him to WR like an Austin Flynn. Just the way he moves in space makes me think of a possession receiver. Not saying it will happen but he definately has the skills to play other positions. Also considering that this QB commit for 2012 looks to be ranked pretty highly, if this new kid is really that good of a QB, would shock me if Rhoads didn't find some way to get Richardson on the field somewhere else.

uhhh

here's another video on SR. Impressive to say the least.

I see what you guys mean. There is improvement in him. He has added zip to his passes and is still hitting them in stride. Most of the time when he is making his receivers go get the ball it is to lead them away from a defender or back onto the field of play rather than leading them so their momentum takes them out of bounds. He still needs to work on arm strength. Too many streaking WR's that have to hold up for the ball, but hopefully that arm strength has continued to improve.

The best thing I saw was that he scrambles like most pro QB's. He scrambles to buy space and time for a completion. He rarely seems to scramble to run. When he does run he does a surprisingly good job of setting up the blocks for his down field blockers (for a QB).

This is an impressive tape. I just wish there were tapes of all of the recruits that showed the dirty laundry on them. A tape that showed their weaknesses so everyone didn't get too high on the players.

Well, maybe this freshman.

On the other hand, I think that SR would benefit hugely from a redshirt. At the very least, from a S&C perspective. He'll have fun dueling with Knott, Barnett and Rohach in a couple of years anyway.

Nobody is predicting SR will come in and be our qb this year. But if the coaches aren't happy with our qb's after the spring, it would be foolish not to throw SR into the mix this fall, and CPR has said SR will get a good look. To say that there is no way a freshman comes in and beats out 4 other guys makes no sense as it has happened before in college football at all levels.
