Player Profile: Sam Richardson (QB)

That fact is simply wrong. If Richardson played a different position he wouldn't be a D1 player. Derby was recruited as a TE, LB, and QB. Derby was recruited to Iowa because he's a great athlete. Richardson was recruited to ISU because he's a great QB.

I think you brought up Derby just to talk about him. The two aren't even close to similar.

100% agree. SR is as true of a QB as there is, whereas Derby is an athlete that can play many positions. Sam doesn't need polish to be a good QB, as he's already that. Being named the central Florida offensive player of the year as a QB is verification to me that he's already solid.

I respectfully disagree but that is what these forums are for..... discussion. I just wouldn't be surprised if they were to eventually move him to WR like an Austin Flynn. Just the way he moves in space makes me think of a possession receiver. Not saying it will happen but he definately has the skills to play other positions. Also considering that this QB commit for 2012 looks to be ranked pretty highly, if this new kid is really that good of a QB, would shock me if Rhoads didn't find some way to get Richardson on the field somewhere else.

I'm blown away by this guy. Why would they move their best QB recruit to another position? He's athletic sure, but he's a better passer than he is an athlete. We will be lucky to land another QB as accurate as him again anytime soon. He needs to RS and focus on the playbook and making himself better. This will be his offense when Jantz is done.

I loved Richardson after seeing his junior highlight tape, and his senior tape shows a polished qb that can make all the throws, and who's very elusive when he needs to be. He reminds me of David Archer, who imo was the most talented qb we've had at ISU in my 40 years of watching the Clones. I know there's Seneca and Sage, but I still think Archer was the best overall talent we've had here at QB and SR looks like he's in that mold.

I think we need to mark this down. An Iowa fan thinks more of an ISU recruit than ISU fans. I don't think anyone here thinks Richardson is a good enough athlete to play WR. Sam is a very good athlete for a QB, but he would be a poor athlete at WR.

People tend to forget about Archer, but I agree 100%.

I don't think there's any way he could play receiver. He doesn't have the quickness. He was an effective runner on read plays but outside of that he just wants to throw it.

No way SRQB plays any other position then QB.

He doesn't even want to run when hes at QB, you don't find that very often with talented QB's. He is exactly what we want/need at QB. Obviously he can and will run if he has to, but hes a pass first guy. And he has the ability to move in the pocket allowing receivers extra time to get open. If he just keeps working on his arm strength he will be very dangerous assuming he gets the playbook down.

That is exactly what I loved about him. There were numerous opportunities in plays to take off for 5-10 yards but he keeps his eyes up and finds someone else.

How about those plays where he starts taking off on a run, and then stops and fires the ball to an open receiver down the field. That guys eyes are scanning the field even as he starts running...... I like it.......

You guys put my mind at ease a little bit. I only have seen the Junior highlight reel. I came away concerned about the throws and what an athletic Big 12 DB would do with the time the completions were taking. If he improved on this during his senior year count me as excited as well.

I will take a QB with accuracy, touch and understanding of the D's he's seeing over a monster arm and breakaway speed any day. Many throws that coulda/shoulda/woulda this last year had lots of arm but lacked touch.

Please don't take this as a shot at any previous ISU QB.

This kid is already "our best QB"? This is based on highlight tapes, which is all we have from 3 of our current QBs who we have argued haven't done enough, or we've diagnosed their weaknesses, or said they aren't ready, etc. Come on people. Everyone but Steele should transfer I guess. Sucks for them. Seriously?
Also, I have to say I love this site, but I think this player profile was done in poor timing. Seems like great disrespect for the 4 we have now who are currently battling it out to see who will be the guy for next year and beyond.

Guess I'm not following your logic. How is the QB position different than any other position on the football team ? There is competition for every position. There are likely new players coming in that may be more talented than any current players in that position..... Actually, that is what we hope happens. That we continually get better and better players. That is how a team improves.

I don't think anyone said any of that. What was said is that his highlight tape has a lot of positives. No one even came close to implying he would be a factor this season either.

here's another video on SR. Impressive to say the least.
