Playcalling Isn't That Bad

We have no identity on offense. What plays do we consistently run well? If you are the opposing team's DC, what do you have to stop to beat ISU? The reality is right now we don't do anything particularly well offensively.
Texas has us off balance because they have 6'5 inch olympians at wide reciever. Not be cause they have steller play calling. They had the same guy calling plays they did against oklahoma. We had the same guy that called plays against baylor. Meltdown people every week.
This is clearly not a meltdown. Holding them to 33 I would say is a sort of victory for the D that was getting lit up all day. It is frustrating when we are running the ball well, yet trying to make the passing game work when its not...
I believe we are way below average in the offensive play-calling department. I realize that Mess has done this for a living and could probably X and O everyone here under the table, but I just don't see the imagination or the understanding that when something works, you gotta keep using it. I don't know if it's an ego thing or what.
It certainly isn't all his fault, the mistakes in play-calling get amplified by below-average offensive line play, dropped passes, and inaccuracies at QB, but there is certainly vast room for improvement with the OC.

So the 1st play of the game from Texas wasn't creative?
The play where Texas has the guy in motion and looks like they are going to pass to him and turn and pass the other way for a screen (even the announcers commented on) wasn't creative.
The statue of Liberty type play they ran wasn't creative?

I guess, who knows how many points texas would have put up if our offense was scoring forcing them to keep the pedal down.
The thing I am frustrated with is when we are getting the run game going and getting a couple first downs and big gains; Mess calls a pass play on 1st down and thrown incomplete. Then we go back to the run on 2nd and end up with 3rd and 5 or worse. That pretty much puts the team in a position to pass which was not the strong suit and will not be the strong suit until next year. I told my friends that we should go deep as a joke right before Jantz threw that INT in the second quarter. I said it jokingly because we were moving the ball so well on the ground that the thought of going deep with Jantz was farcical.
I think this hits it about as close as it gets... the talent out there was more lopsided than the score... our effort and determination can best some teams but when a truly talented team comes out with a good gameplan and executes and shows full effort we just aren't equipped to win... plain and simple, especially when we come out as flat as we did today... we can upset teams by giving more effort than them when they overlook us as being able... but when a top talent team comes to play we lose...we just dont have as much talent as the Texas's or Oklahoma's...
You know what makes play calling better... hitting WIDE OPEN receivers and making the correct reads. Go back and look at the tape at the zone reads that went for a loss, take notice of the wide open field in front of Jantz.

I really thought that the run game was showing signs of life and doing pretty well for a bit. However, that could be because the passing game was just that bad in comparison.
I don't mind that nearly as much as going pass, pass after a 1st down. In fact, I'd prefer the 2nd down run after an incompletion on 1st. You have a better chance of leaving yourself something manageable. It's the pass, pass, and 3rd and 10 when the run game is working that drives me insane.
Play calling under Herman and now Mess has been better and less predictable than under Mac and Chiz when I considered it horribly conservative and predictable, we just had better QBs and sometimes WRs in some of Mac's years. It's been a while since we had a real consistent playmaker on O. I hope we get to see what a CPR team can do with a QB and WR corp that can throw and catch. I'm not expecting us to have personnel like OU, we just need a few playmakers on offense like we do on D.
But to say the playcalling was good is a joke... it was kinda awful, and to those who say jantz was making wrong reads on those runs, there was nowhere to go either way and would you rather him keep it and go into defenders or give it to someone with more actual running ability? His throws were off though, had a couple drops, they blitzed A LOT, just seemed like no one showed up to play...
Nope, Steve Loney managed to put together a very good offense with very similar talent. Ohio State has not looked good on offense other than having a qb who can run very well. The problem is never the scheme. It's how it is coached and whether you have the players to run it and can coach them to run it. ISU has more than enough players to run the scheme at other positions. QB play is not good though.
ISU has no identity on offense and it starts with the quarterback position. Play calling is all over the place because you can't count on the Jantz to consistently make plays against decent defenses.
Jantz is not good at all against decent defenses. His undiscipined play does not work then. I do blame the OC for not figuring that out.
You are correct that Jantz will look good again against a terrible WV defense. Barnett beat the only decent team on the schedule that also has a good defense. He also about beat a very good defense and team in Kstate. Start barnett to beat Kansas.
I fear starting Jantz against Kansas who does have a decent defense will lead to a loss. I would play him against WV.
