Plans for the solar eclipse

Eclipses would be so much more fun if we didn't know that it was simply the moon passing in front of the sun.

I thought so too, but then my dad had told me during a total eclipse you can see stars and sometimes the birds go nuts thinking its night time.

Libraries around here handing our free eclipse glasses. Way better than dude selling them for ten bucks at the state fair.

My son and I just made the cereal box reflection viewer...fun little project to do together. Not as good as the glasses (cant find them in Ankeny), but will be fun to show him later today if the clouds disperse.
I'll sell you my glasses for $100!

I'm curious what people's plans are for the solar eclipse. I'm not one who gets really worked up about the different phases of the moon and all the different solar/lunar events that seem to happen every month or so. But I learned of this a couple of years ago and marked it on the calendar thinking it would be something cool for the kids since it's so rare.

But now I'm reading that hotels are tripling their prices and officials are worried about major traffic jams. I didn't realize this would be *that* big of a deal We have a school event that evening and can't afford to be stuck in traffic for hours getting home.

We're tentatively planning to drive to Nebraska or KC if the weather cooperates but I'm not sure how to strategize this. Just look for a big box store parking lot near the interstate, then jump in the car the second it's over?
I think I have a unique opportunity which my wife and I are going to take advantage of. We live 45 minutes from the largest movable telescope in the world in Greenbank, WV. They, of course, are making a big affair of this as they'll be able to track and display stuff no other telescope can. We're quite excited and will be leaving shortly for the all-day affair.

We got some at the fair for free from the Broadlawns booth. Might be able to check local hospitals or clinics.

I thought I heard the next eclipse will be in 2024?

April 8, 2024. Detroit will be at 99% and my wife's aunt's and cousins' an hour east of Cleveland will be in totality. Guess I don't have to feel bad about not wanting to drive 8+ hours to Nashville. Just have to survive the next 6.5 years.

God speed! ;)

South of Columbia Missouri, clear sky now but clouds all around. Hurry up eclipse.

It was pouring rain here for nearly 3 hours. 15 minutes before the eclipse was set to begin, it nearly completely cleared up.
