Can I ask ballpark how much? I don't even know what is reasonable

You should be able to find Hickory Hall catering prices online.

I got married in Ames 15 years ago this summer. Our first choice for reception was MU (booked), open lobby area in Scheman (booked) and ended up on 2nd floor Scheman. It worked fine, Iowa State Center food is good--people especially loved the sesame chicken. I would definitely look into the Alumni Center if I were getting married now.

My sister did her reception at Hickory Hall 8.5 years ago, was good as well. She was supposed to be married in Ames but the church double booked her date and they ended up over in Boone. On the Sat of Pufferbilly days. Streets were closed that we're on the way to the church.

We had our rehearsal dinner at a park with Hy Vee grilling. We wanted to do Brookside but it was the 4th of July and not available. We all went and watched the city fireworks after dinner.

Since we were married near the 4th we wanted to leave our reception while guests were doing sparklers. Apparently ISU frowns upon fireworks at their facilities. ;)

We did take pictures at the Campanile and in the Union. My hubby proposed under the Camapnile, so had to incorporate that.

Best of luck to you!

We had our reception last November in Ames. Had it at the CPMI event center (round copper building North of ISU research park). It was the best price in town, and they have no affiliation with any caterers so you are free to price shop wherever you like for food. You are allowed to bring your own alcohol so that saves big money. You are basically just renting the space and the tables and chairs they have on site.

Another tidbit, if you are having your wedding on a slow weekend (no games) call the Gateway Hotel to try to block rooms. They will cut a huge deal just to fill rooms on slow weekends that the major chains will not.

So you would do it at that place again? I like the idea of BYOB and getting Hickory to cater.

Yes I would do it there again. I would check out a few other catering places as well. We had a place out of Boxholm (Good Times Catering) do it and we felt like we got a lot more for our money than any of the places in Ames. Some small town places are more willing to work on price.

Was at a wedding where they did sparklers. Spent the next 15 minutes after couple left dealing with burns due to people turning and catching other people and kids hitting women in the legs with them while they waved them. Wouldn't recommend this if you have a large crowd.

Thanks for the help.

1) Did you do kegs?
2) Was there an insurance policy you had to take out or anything?
3) Can I ask how much to reserve the room? (I tried calling didn't get a hold of the right person)

1) No we didn't get kegs. Cans were much cheaper. As long as we caught a sale that was $2.00 off of regular price (VERY common in Ames), and returned at least 40% of the cans we were money ahead. By returning all of the cans we saved much more.

2) Yes, you have to either put the liability on your homeowners insurance (or your parents if acceptable) or you have to have a licensed bartender with a liquor license take the liability. We just put it on our homeowners insurance (~$100 I believe) and then paid a couple of our parents friends kids to play "bartender". That way we had some control over who was getting alcohol to prevent actually having to use the insurance.

3) I think it was around $79.00 a night or so. You have to set it up with their wedding planner.

I don't know if you are interested, but I have been tossing around the idea of allowing wedding parties use my bus for transportation. If it is something you are interested in feel free to pm me. I can send pics if interested as well.

Has anyone done the Campanile lawn for the ceremony? Its looking like Hickory's Hall for the reception. Thank you for all of the help everyone.

it might be late but our daughter was married at the Memorial Union last November. They did a great job.

We did the big Methodist church on Lincoln Way, which was awesome. We had the fire truck take the wedding party from there to the campanile for pics, then to Hickory Hall for dinner. I'm pretty sure our whole wedding was under $5K. We paid for 2-3 kegs and wine I believe. It's been 12 years, so it's a little foggy.

As for having a wedding on Friday, game weekend, doesn't sound like a good plan. Hotels are harder to find, makes it more expensive, your rehearsal dinner is on Thursday... None of this makes the people in your party happy. Also, remember that a fall wedding means that your anniversary will land on a game day every few years. That's always fun if your wife hates football as much as mine. Luckily my wife doesn't get to worked up over anniversaries and stuff.
