Peter Jok to Iowa

I've read this on HN. I'm not sure how a bust with only 1 scholarship is better than a bust with 5-6. In fact, I think it's the opposite.

Anyway, I agree that Fran saw the risk as worth taking, and Fred didn't. Only time will tell which strategy was right.

I happen to think you could have done a lot worse. IMO, worst case scenario, Jok ends up being a sort of 1-dimensional player who can shoot lights out. If his knee recovers fully and stays healthy, he could end up being a big time player.

I'm kind of with you on that. I don't know why it doesn't matter if he is a bust if we only have one. I would think it's the same almost.

This couldn't be more wrong. Fred was recruiting Woodbury until he realized he had no chance with him. In the past couple years, Iowa has had Barnes, Paige, Woodbury, and Gessel (technically Nebraska, but plays AAU in Iowa) as 4* or 5* players. A team with those four guys (plus McDermott, Oglesby, and others I'm forgetting) would compete in any conference in the country and likely be a top 4-5 seed.

OK, Barnes is in the NBA after falling short of the college hype and Little Chewy is good but the other four really haven't played at all. This makes a likely top 4-5 seed? Back away from the bong.

To be fair, Creighton was an 8 seed just by Dougy D himself. Then you have a top 10 NBA pick in there.....

Meh, it's not CRAZY to think that.

The point that they could be great is very valid, but the same can be said with more certainty in other states as well, which you have to remember.

Now, I just can't let this one go. Isn't this the exact line that ISU fans get Iowa fans so much grief over? If Jok turns out to be the player he had the potential of being pre-injury, I can guarantee you that Fred would have wanted him. Fred just apparently didn't see the need to take the risk, while Fran only had one scholly, so if he's a bust it wouldn't have made much of a difference anyways.

I agree. It's better to have 100% of a recruiting class be a bust than 20%. :jimlad:

This is why Iowa sucks. Peter Jok, unless he is completely different from last year, is not very good. Many people around Valley thought, during last season, that he was D-II material. Lazy on defense (Kicked Adam Woodbury's *** in the State tourney though), not great at getting to the bucket. Streaky shooter. No work ethic from what I have heard. He must be havng a good summer cuz he sucked last year.

How is this different than saying "Fred did not want him anyway"? Just because Fred may regret not recruiting him, doesn't make IASTATE4LIFE's statement incorrect.

I kind of agree with this, and similarly, Iowa has several 3/4 type players ahead of Jok, while Iowa State needs someone to step in pretty quickly after Clyburn graduates (hence the recruitment of Hogue). In this case Iowa can afford to let Jok simmer for a year or two - Iowa State does not necessarily have that luxury at the SF position for the 2013 class.

Does Iowa suck? I think Fran is building a pretty solid program there. They will only lose one senior next year, a guy who may not even be in the rotation, and will add the Wisconsin transfer plus Jok. Even if he's a bust it's not going to really hurt Iowa, the potential upside is definitely worth the limited risk. The biggest need for Iowa now is for one of the freshman guards besides Gessel to prove that they can play point in the B10, because if those two guys flop, Iowa is looking very thin in the backcourt going into 2013.

Agreed. If Gessel hits the ground running, they could be alright this year. If Woodbury develops to what they think he can be - they could be really good next year, especially with Uthoff becoming eligible. Two big "ifs", but I won't be shocked... (Also, they will have to collectively learn how to stay in front of people since last year).

Fran looks to have things headed up.

Adam Woodbury is a bad player. Valley's "bigs" (6'6"-6'7") guys ate him up in the state tourney. He had like 10 points. He has range to about 4 feet, no ball handling skills, and no strength down low. IIRC he didn't even have a double double.

He could be a bust, or he could be a star.......which is true of most any recruit.

I think what would have kept me away from him is that not a lot of major schools were still after him. To me, that is kind of a warning sign.

This is why I expect him to not contribute a ton his freshman year, be average his sophomore year, and then start coming on as a good player as an upperclassman. It will take him awhile, but he is 7 feet tall and he will be able to get much much better than he is now with D1 coaching.

I think Woodbury will get better every year and be very solid as a junior and senior. Fran is building a good program.

Edit: Dalton beat me to it.
