The replacement value on my policy is $61k, which is probably $5k more than I could get for it if I sold it private party. Coincidentally, I have a truck that is probably worth around $3k. It is 20 years old and has 110,000 miles. I do not have comprehensive on it.
The math doesn't work out in my favor to carry comprehensive on either. If my car were to be totaled and I didn't have insurance, I could afford to replace it. So why do I carry it?
I view this the same way I do having an extended warranty on your car. Yeah you risk getting a lemon but in the end you should come out ahead if you apply the practice of self insuring consistently in your life. Obviously you don’t self insure life/health/auto/home.
