Peppers 6-years to the Bears

Looks like the Lions are grabbing some def. players also. Might be a little tougher division next yr.

Yeah, you are signing a 9 year veteran to a 6 year contract. That sounds smart. Typical Bears. Why would they not try and draft a Brandon Graham or something. They will be in position to get a good DE prospect since there are so many this year. This makes no sense to me.

They would need a 1st or early 2nd to get graham. They have neither

the Bears don't have many draft picks this year. Signing a ProBowl caliber DE allows them to use what picks they have to fill other holes. Additionally, look at the way that Peppers handled Bryant McKinnie when the Vikes played the Panthers this year. This move makes a ton of sense for Chicago.

I don't know if this will work out, but I appreciate the Bears trying to get better via FA the last few years, unlike previously.

Yep...Bears front office is so stupid sometimes, production after 30 goes down exponentially after 30 unless your a QB. Cubs and Bears must of took the same management strategy seminar.

As a Packer fan I like this move. That means they still are not concentrating on getting a receiver and thus cutler has nobody to throw the ball to. They have a bunch of number 3 receivers. The NFC d backs eat them up and Cutler has to force it in there. Go Pack.

*cough couch* Wide Receivers *cough cough*

Echo your comments, but from a Vikes perspective. Peppers is not a give it your all type of player, and he is now 30 years old. Not a great investment, esp. for 6 years.

Nice one Bears!

Julius Peppers

So now the Bears are spending a bunch of money to plug a few holes (when they have so many) with old veterans and at the end of the day, they still won't be better than a 3rd place team in the division (behind Minny and the Pack?
They would have been so much better off drafting for the future. Let's be honest. The near future belongs to Vikes (assuming Favre returns). Then the Pack will be right there soon after as Minny ages, loses players to free agency. The Bears are a good 3 or 4 year away from being a contender and that assumes the Cutler experiments works.

what draft picks were they supposed to use? They have neither a 1st or 2nd round pick. Also, how does the signing of free agents prevent them from drafting for the future? They still have the same number of picks today as they did yesterday.

he's 30 now, out of his prime, and he'll be 36 by the time this contract is up.

but as a packer fan... :biglaugh:

and has anyone noticed how good teams are built through the draft? not by throwing a ton of money at a few holes and hoping it gets better. the bears are trying to be the cubs.

Did not know that. OK, well that idea is shot to hell but there has to be a better option than a 30 YO Julius Peppers on a 6 year contract. I am just hoping my Niners pick up Graham.

actually, the Bears are one of the best teams in the league when it comes to building their team in the draft. Look at their roster and see how many players they drafted themselves.

Now, you can make the argument that they are not that good of a team, but historically they have been successful when it comes to drafting, especially in the later rounds.

I would just say that they are a pretty bad football team. If they drafted all of their players themselves that doesn't reflect well on them IMO.

Going into a non-capped year, the Bears can still get a WR...especially since there are a number of them being shopped around or who are free agents.

Getting Taylor and Peppers are huge for the Bears as they have limited draft picks this year.
