Paul Shirley Tweet

I liked Paul when he played but the last several years, the stuff that comes out of his mouth makes me groan. He owes what little fame he has to Iowa State, so he should really just shut the **** up.

He owes his fame far more to his own ability to write than to Iowa State. Without his blog, nobody outside of Ames or his hometown would have any idea who he is.

Pretty sure Paul Shirley knows LE and Tinsley better than anyone on this board...including you.

This.

Just because we may not like to hear something, doesn't make it untrue.

Really no reason for Shirley to pick out those two individuals and make such a comment if there isn't some truth to it.

We should just be happy that Paul didn't quit. Our current team seems to think that if it all isn't sunshine and roses and giggles that you should quit.

Do you think that was because he was academically driven, had a demanding major, and didn't have time to sit around and ponder if he was having fun at bball?
Perhaps the more your self-image is tied up in basketball, the faster you bolt if you're not totally happy...

Although without his time at Iowa State and brief NBA "career," I'm betting he would not have had a book published or blog on ESPN at this point.

I love a former Cyclone, especially one that help us reach such a level of success as Paul (et al) did. But the guy is now making a living being a cynical d-bag. He was sucking the fun out of my twitter feed so I stopped following him months ago.

What sucked the fun out of 2000 for me was that PS couldn't get his immobile 6'10" frame into position fast enough to draw a charge.

Fine you take Paul. I'll side with LE and tinsley.

Sorry, but if I were playing on a team for an alcoholic with anger issues and an NBAer who would later be more newsworthy for being the target of a drive-by than his basketball skills, I don't know if I'd be having much fun either.

Shirley made the NBA because he worked his *** off. He should never have been that good to begin with, yet managed to actually spend time on an NBA roster, which is more than you can say about guys who came into college with much more ability (Curtis Stinson anyone?).

You guys are reading way too much into this.

A side note, before Shirley decided to be a jack-*** over twitter, he wrote an article that I really liked about the NCAA Tournament. You can read it here: Journal 43: When basketball became the crying game - NBA - ESPN

Wow, many posters in this thread have blown this way out of proportion. Did it occur to any of you that all he was referring to was Eustachy's justified explosion and Tinsley's missed layup? Nothing else. Just a jab at his coach and point guard. No big deal. If any of you met Eustachy (and I did on occasion), you would understand his dry, wry sense of humor. Hell, get a hold of some pressers with LE. Just like Orr, you'll howl at some of the stuff he said during his time here.

I'm really surprised a lot of you are mad about this. I think everybody here knows that Tinsley and Eustachy probably weren't the most fun guys to be around. I'm sure Shirley realizes the things LE and Tinsley did for him but his memories of the tournament just remind him of playing for an extremely demanding coach and bad teammate.
I will say, I've read just about everything the guy has written and he hasn't had many positive things to say about his time in Ames. He's a cynic but interesting to read.
This blog entry particularly is something to think about:
The Basketball Leprechaun, by Paul Shirley

Shirley **** you. We were the only team to give you a chance. Then you cry like a gosh damn baby. LE and Tinsley made you.

Shirley sucked a lot of the fun out of our elite 8 game against MSU for me when he fell into the lane while we were at the line late...

That guy seems to have no problem taking repeated jabs at Fizer, Eustachy and Tinsley...maybe he should think a little bit about why he got put on the stage he was on...newsflash Paul...we went 34-0 at Hilton Coliseum while Jamaal Tinsley was at ISU...and it wasn't because of you.
