Pat Summitt

Sounds like her family is preparing the public for some grim news...

Pat Summitt’s family released a statement late Sunday morning regarding the health of the former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach, acknowledging "the past few days have been difficult for Pat as her early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s Type, progresses."

Five hours earlier, a source told the News Sentinel that Summitt was "struggling" and those close to her were "preparing for the worst."

Re: Pat Summitt

Crazy to see this hit someone who would still be coaching, let alone one of the best to ever do what they do. Just a bummer

I once sat near the Tennessee bench during a NCAA game vs Georgia (@ Carver-Hawkeye arena) way back in the 80's. We were family friends of Katie Abrahamson--former Georgia Bulldog, transferred to Iowa, and later ISU wbb asst coach.

i was just learning who Pat Summit was, and her intensity as a bench-coach was beyond anything I ever experienced.

You could cut it with a knife. She stood alone in that regard.

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 2m2 minutes ago Mike and Mike talked today about a coaching Mount Rushmore. So many great possibilities, but I'd have Lombardi, Wooden, Bryant, Summitt.

I would agree with this tweet.

Would have been cool to have seen ISU go up against Summitt and Tenn. 3 opportunities were presented but never happened. In 98 ISU lost home game to Rutgers with a trip to Knoxville on the line. 2002 lost to BYU with a opportunity to play Tenn in Hilton. 2009 ISU advanced but Tenn was upset.

her locker room speeches are amazing - if there was a woman who probably could've coached in the nba/nfl i'd have bet on her, she's that tough.

also made me realize that if she were coaching today, she'd have transfers like crazy, and probably get a lawsuit as well. different times....

I remember seeing her in PHX after the 2000 Insight game back at our hotel. The band was playing the fight song inside the hotel, and the foyer was packed with ISU fans signing and drinking (serving stations were setup), and she was livid at the hotel front desk. Dressed them down due to the noise, people, and all. Good Times....

I remember her appealing to Cyclone fans to find something orange in their closet and come out and support her team after ISU lost. My thought was really, you think one of the long time underdog school's fans are going come out and openly support a Goliath in the sport?

That foursome was tough to cheer for anyone. Tenn the ultimate Goliath, Vandy who took us out the year before, BYU who just took us out and UNC and their ***** of a coach.
