Pat Forde on Kansas' hoops recruiting (FBI-related)

93% market share vs. 4% market share. Do the math. They cheat far more than Adidas. If the dopey financial advisor that squaled had dealings with a Nike guy instead of an Adidas guy then this thing is 10x bigger in scope with 10x the # of big names.

or.... if you lead the market there is less incentive/need to cheat?

Paging "randomfan44"..........

Can't wait to see his spin on these breaking developments. I'll bet on the "Everyone else is doing it" defense.

Or maybe, "Since there is not video evidence of Self putting cash directly into a recruits hand this proves nothing."
No spin needed. It will be interesting to see what the ncaa does with all of this, what they can prove it means and when they get around to doing it. Obviously Self knows this stuff goes on behind the scenes; everyone knows it. Prove he was involved and both he and KU deserves to face appropriate punishment.

Taking down a banner has to be the most pointless "punishment" in existence. KU went to the Final Four, banner or no banner. So silly.

I agree that taking down a banner doesn't remove the memories of the final 4 run for fans.

I disagree it is meaningless punishment. It is a huge black mark against KU basketball program and will be for years moving forward. It puts into question all the other wins the program had and will have under Self leadership.
I live in Mpls and people still reference the vacated Clem Haskin's U of M's Final 4 30 years later in very poorly.

Ummm isn't that what the texts did?

Between this line and the texts what more "proof" do you need?

TJ Gassnola just testified in court that former Adidas exec Jim Gatto told him he got a call from Bill Self thanking him after Silvio de Sousa committed to Kansas.

Thats because it was the last time Minnesota was good. If they had 3 more Final Fours since then you would never hear a word about it.

Is the fact that Kentucky had a season wiped off the books back in the 50s due to a massive gambling scandal hurting them? Nope.

Not sure you want to reference UK under Calipari, as the program that people think is clean. Much like pointing a Nike as obviously dirt;y with out evidence is a weak argument. Look there not here shouldn't be used in this thread about the KU Adidas scandal the ongoing court case implicating the program. Stay on point.

There is a difference between saying these allegations/potential NCAA ramifications are a mark against the University and Self and impact short team and saying it will ruin the program. This isn't a SMU death penalty situation but to think they haven't lost some respect nationally along with some potential recruits with this going on that is just plain homerism.

Shoe companies have been paying kids for several decades now. Anybody that has been involved in college basketball knows this. The smart schools have a working relationship with their shoe companies where talk of payments never gets to them but they all know it's going on. It's obvious by this trial that several times Adidas was bidding against Nike and UA. It's pretty obvious Self knew, but there's still no actual evidence that can be used in a court of law. All the wire taps and all the e-mails and text and the mountain of recordings the FBI has accumulated and all they have is, "We good?" Coach K and Roy can make those statements because they are confident they have everything set up with Nike so they are never involved. It took someone getting caught doing something else that had a relationship with Adidas to rat this out and put it in the open.

The quick question is, does KU have to take down a banner and remove a date from the Conference Banner because Silvio De Sousa played? Does the NCAA just hand out a couple of punishments and try to sweep it under the rug? Or does the NCAA really try to do something about college basketball? Do they decide to take away the charade and let HS kids sign with shoe companies and still go to college? Or do they decide to make sure no college kids are getting any shoe money and possibly eliminate shoe companies from being involved in college sports? The top 50 players every year could sign with shoe companies and go play in the G league. Will the future of college basketball look similar to what college baseball is now? Where all the top players sign out of high school and go to the minor leagues and the late bloomers end up going to college. Will be interesting to see what this does to college basketball.

Nike admits it. Watch the documentary student athlete. But you have to be careful about what you are saying is dirty. Shoe companies aren't prohibited from trying to push kids to certain schools. Nor are they prohibited from talking to coaches about recruits. In fact, they can even have the parents of kids on their payroll, see Marvin Bagley.

And no, it won't impact potential recruits. Remember, players are the ones getting screwed by the NCAA. There is no reason why they shouldn't be able to get endorsements etc.

You also have to realize that there has been nothing shown in court that shows Self knew of any payments to players. 1) the say Preston got paid but Self and KU never played him. 2) testimony is that all he paid DeSousa's guardian was $2500 to help pay for HS classes and the guardian denies this saying he didn't get any money, 3) testimony several times that the coaches didn't know anything. The defense in their cross presented the texts as evidence Self knew. Gassnola said that is not what the texts show. He testified that they regularly talk about recruits. This is how you get recruits. He stated again, no coaches knew of the payments. They were hidden from the coaches.

How is anyone in prison? All it takes is denying the crime and you should be believed.
